    Expanding on this heritage and passion for performance, Mercury Racing designed the QC4v engine platform to totally change the high performance marine market.  Not content with just building a great engine, we go as far as developing our own electrical and engine management systems to provide a fully integrated powertrain solution.

    We use CAD modeling to create the product’s mathematical geometry to allow for continual optimization of fit, function, analysis and component production to ensure customer satisfaction and reliability for the life of the engine.

    Integrated Product Development

    Our vertically integrated product development process enables us to develop high specific output powertrains that are both efficient and reliable.  One dimensional cycle simulation modeling is used to optimize initial combustion, valve events, ports and air delivery systems while 3D Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis is used to optimize air flow, cooling, fuel and lubrication systems.

    Data is king at Mercury Racing so it should be no surprise that Finite Element Analysis (FEA) studies are conducted on the block, head and rotating components to verify the decisions that are made.  We conduct fired engine, motored engine and dynamic rig testing to calibrate the engine management systems, evaluate combustion and measure timing drive dynamics and torsional excitation to name a few.

    Carl Kiekhaefer

    Mercury Racing has a storied history of success in high performance marine and automotive racing circuits.  This all started back in 1955 when Mercury Marine founder Carl Kiekhaefer, entered NASCAR and won 80% of the races his teams entered as well as three national championships.  Kiekhaefer innovated the sport by being the first team to practice pit stops, wear matching uniforms and use enclosed car haulers.  One innovation that is still used today is the modern pleated paper air filter, designed by Carl himself during his quest for NASCAR championships.

    Automotive Innovation

    In 1990, General Motors approached Mercury Marine to produce the all-aluminum 5.7 litre LT-5 engine for the Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1. Mercury was selected for its technology and experience manufacturing aluminum engines.  The ZR-1, powered by the 405 hp. quad cam, 32-valve V8, was a world-class sports car in the early 90s.  A Mercury LT-5 powered ZR-1 averaged 175.9 mph over 24 hours to break a 50 year old FIA endurance record in 1990.
