Man – I love this time of year. Things are humming here at Mercury Racing. In fact – I’m so jammed – I really shouldn’t be taking the time to write this. I just couldn’t wait to share the latest news regarding our Bravo I FS propeller.

I recently provided  22-24″ pitch FS wheels to Josh Wiesner who owns The Boat Doc, a local Mercury dealership in Lomira, Wisconsin. Josh agreed to conduct a performance test, comparing the 4-blade Bravo I FS with the 3-blade Tempest Plus. The test boat was a 2013 Triton 216 Fishunter powered by a Verado 300 Pro Fourstroke.

Josh couldn’t have picked a worse time to test. It was a week-long stretch of 85 degree temps and unusually high humidity. Thanks to electronic boost control, the supercharged 300 Pro Fourstroke didn’t miss a beat.

The 300 Pro Fourstroke was first rigged with a 22″ pitch Tempest Plus. The boat ran 62 mph @ 6150 rpm with full fuel, two guys and a boat load of gear. Josh then switched to the 24″ pitch FS and began his run. Over time – he was able to raise the engine by one-half inch.  At that setting the boat ran 64.9 mph at 6050 rpm. The engine height, (measured from bottom of the cavitation plate to boat bottom) was 4-7/8 inches.

Whats Up Doc?
The Triton likes the Bravo I FS.  Although hole shots were similar, the FS provided enhanced bow lift, faster acceleration and nearly three mile per hour gain in top-end speed. A big change – particularly when under heavy loads as Josh has demonstrated.

    Not to be nit-picky but was the original Tempest and final Bravo 1 FS props left bone stock or were either of them lab finished?
    Would you attribute the bow lift to the lack of the flare on the end of the exhaust tube on the B1, or is it all blade design?

    1. No problem Brent; both props were box stock, not tweaked or Lab Finished. The Bravo I FS line is designed so tweaking isn’t required (it’s already done). The FS props have great leading edges, blades are robust for durability, cup heights are true, props are zero balanced to minimize vibration, the shortened barrel increases bow lift and high polish minimizing corrosion. At Mercury Racing we are promoting constancy in our propellers; if you want a prop tweaked often times the prop goes back and forth until a performance compromised is reached which also leads to greater expense and if the prop gets damaged replacement becomes a problem.

        I run a 1900 pro V with a 225 Honda. (sorry, but that is what the boat came with when I bought it used). The boat came with a 21 pitch high five. With that prop I got 49 mph at 5800 rpm. I have tried a 19 pitch tempest. With that prop I hit 52.5 at 5900 rpms. The boat run nice with that prop. Hearing about the bravo one FS, I went and bought the 20 pitch. The boat runs at 51 mph at around 5700 rpm. It seems that I can really trim up with out losing grip. I gain rpm to 5950 but no speed. Could my motor be to low. Currently it is at 2nd hole from the top, with my cavitation plate even with the bottom of my boat at 1/4 trim.

          Well, thanks for running Mercury propellers. You’re correct. The Bravo I FS does work better with the engine not buried in the water. I’ll generally speak as if you had Mercury because there are a few things different between the Honda and Mercury. Measuring the distance between the underside (bottom) of the anti-cavitation plate to the center of prop shaft – it’s generally 8.25″. Check your motor to compare. If you were running a Mercury, I’d recommend having your cavitation plate 1.75″ to 2.5″ above the bottom of the boat. Please make sure your engine is receiving good water pressure if you plan on adjusting engine height. Typically, the engine will gain 100 to 150 rpm for each adjustment up (via transom bracket mounting holes). With Mercury, each hole is .75”. Check your engine. If your engine climbs from 5700 to 5800 or 5850 rpm you could expect to gain an additional 1.5 mph. Here’s an easy way to measure the distance between the bottom of the boat to the bottom of the cavitation plate. While on a flat surface, level the bottom of the boat when it’s on the trailer. Trim the motor so the cavitation plate is level. Using a tape measure, measure the distance from the bottom of the cavitation plate to the floor, next measure the bottom of the boat to the floor subtracting from the cavitation plate measurement. If you were running Mercury – that’s where we would like to see 1.75” to 2.5” distance.

  2. Hi Scott, I have a 2012 2075 with a 300 pro verado. I ran a 21 pitch tempest 6050 rpm full load at 59 mph. Would a Bravo 1 fs work for me? If so what pitch?

    1. Hi Mike,
      Sorry it’s taken so long to get back with you with your question. I’ve been busy with the FLW followed by the Lake of the Ozarks shootout. The Bravo I FS typically offers improved planing without allot of bow lift. The Bravo I FS mid-range acceleration often improves because of the wedged leading edge on each of the four blades. The prop also keeps the boat on plane at slower speeds for better boat control in rough water. The prop was designed to offer bow lift (similar to the Tempest) and stern lift (which helps lift the weight of the batteries, fuel, live well and engine). Run the 22″ pitch Bravo I FS to get similar RPM as the Tempest. Ideally, if you have a jack plate, you will want to raise your engine .25″ at a time until you find the sweet spot. The common set-up is usually .50″ to .75″ above the height used for running a 3 blade. Always make sure you have good water pressure when adjusting height.

        I have the same boat as Mike – 2013 lund 2075 pro v with 300 four stroke. No jackplate. Fully loaded I can get 59 – 60 with 6080 RPM running the tempest 21. I do find however that the last couple of degrees of trim bring up the RPM from 5800 to the 6080 but I don’t get any speed increase so I assume all I am doing is ventilating at that point. I also find that my optimum running trim for about a 4000 RPM cruise tends to cause me to start to ventilate when I make turns. So… Would the bravo 1 FS likely help with the middle RPM ventilation? Leaving the engine at the stock height would I expect less ventilation at full trim? Would I be better to switch to a tempest 19″ to try to get full loaded RPM up into the 6200 – 6400 rpm range??

          The Bravo I FS will hook up, solving your mid rpm problem. Switching to the 22″ pitch Bravo I FS will get you similar rpm to the 21″ pitch Tempest. The Bravo I FS does like to run higher than the 3 blade. You will typically see a 100 rpm gain when moving up by one transom bracket hole. I’m not sure what the stock height is. Make sure you maintain good water pressure while adjusting engine height. If you step down to the 19″ pitch Tempest, you will gain rpm but lose a couple of mph at top-end. You will also experience similar issues you encounter with the 21″ pitch at mid-range rpm.

  3. Not being funny but that’s not exactly an apples to apples comparison. Of course the 24 pitch prop is faster as long as the motor will pull it to operating RPM. This is only a positive if the boat will only pull the 22 pitch tempest.

      You’re right. It is not apples to apples. We switched from a 3 blade Tempest to a 4 Blade Bravo I FS. The Tempest has height limitations. It needs to be mounted lower in the water to stay hooked up whereas the Bravo I FS runs better at elevated engine heights. Typically, raising an engine increases rpm resulting in the opportunity to increase pitch. The trick is making sure you have the prop hooked up – optimizing performance. You also have to make sure there is good water pressure for the motor The dealer and end customer preferred the performance of the 4 blade over the 3 blade.

    I am currently running a 2013 620 ranger. 250 Pro Verado, Kicker, all the tournament goodies.

    my current prop is a 25p Tempest. I am pulling this prop to 6100 Rpms at 66Mph on Gps.

    my problem is that my holes shot is NOT very good. I am going to try a 24p Tempest as soon as it comes in the mail. but I fear that I will over rev this prop. I also tried a 23p Tempest and the holeshot was awesome here but I could not come anywhere near full throttle as I would hit 6400 Rpms Very Easy.

    any idea what size Bravo I should try? or maybe a different style of prop.

    1. Hi Gary,
      The Bravo I FS is a great choice for your rig. If you want to match the rpm of your 25″ pitch Tempest, go with a 26″ pitch Bravo I FS. If you want to gain 150 rpm (6100 to 6250), then go with the 25″ pitch Bravo I FS. Have fun with the Bravo I FS; it really wakes the boat up.

      1. Hey scott i have had a chance to run a few more props. here are my results.

        the 26p Bravo 1 FS.
        hole shot is not very good when the boat is loaded down.
        mid range is pretty good.
        Top end is GREAT!!!
        70.6Mph at 6300 Rpms.

        according to the prop slip calc mercury offers that is still 17%. also when i adding a fishing partner i drop to 66-67 mph and drop to 6050-6100 Rpms.

        now i almost feel bad for complaining about results like this but i cant help but think that this can be better.

        i have also tested out a 23p Rev 4 with good results.
        hole shot was GREAT with this prop. almost needed a neck brace with the midrange punch this prop offered. top end was 68mph where i needed to get out out of the throttle as i was hitting 6400 Rpms.

        all testing was done with a 6″ Hyd Jack plate on the boat. the rev 4 was ran as high as i could get it to get the top speed.

        the bravo was ran 1″ down to obtain top speed. with the bravo it seemed that as soon as the prop started cavitating it lost performance rather quickly. the rev 4 i could not get to cavitate.

        Now my next test will be with the 25p rev4 but i have a feeling this is going to be a bit to much prop as the 23p was close to wide open throttle.

        here is where the problem lies. correct me if i am wrong here. from what i understand the 25p Bravo 1 FS is just a 24p prop with cupping added to simulate a 25p, and the Rev 4 does not offer a 24p prop.

        now what is the difference in these two props and what prop do you think i am going to have better results from. i am trying to find an ALL OUT SPEED prop.

        1. Gary,
          If you’re heavy load hole shot needs improving with the 26″ pitch Bravo I FS, consider replacing one of the solid vent fittings with a large vent fitting that came with the prop. Running your 250 Verado, see if it is vented enough to improve the hole shot (you may end up going with two large vent fittings). The Bravo I props run light in pitch. That’s why we ask you to move up one inch of pitch when moving from the Tempest to the Bravo I FS (you move up 2” of pitch compared to the Rev 4). If you recalculate the slip using 25″ pitch instead of 26″, then the slip is more in line at 13%. Some of the slip can be contributed to the amount of trim… but if it gets you more speed, we’ll take it. The Rev 4 offers some good attributes but, as you know – it’s limited in pitch offering. If you wanted to compare the hole shot of the 23” pitch Rev 4 you would use a 25″ pitch Bravo I FS. And yes, it would be quicker than the 26″ pitch but about 1 mph less at top end. The Rev 4’s blade design has cup wrapped around the maximum diameter. This enables you to run it higher on the transom. The Bravo I has very little cup at the maximum diameter (typically a faster design). It’s hard to answer your question re: cavitation. If it’s at wide open throttle then the engine might be too high or trimmed out too far. The Bravo I props are cast in 2″ pitch increments so yes, we make the 25″ pitch from the 24″ pitch casting. Comparing the 24” Bravo I to the 25″ the 25″ has more cup along the trailing edge resulting in a 150 rpm difference. On rigs equipped with jack plates, you can tell the difference on how the odd pitch might hook up better than the even pitch. It all has to do with how high the engine is. If you’re looking for top speed – you already have it with the 26” Bravo I FS. It just may take some tweaking with the venting to get a good hole shot.

  5. Hello, I have a 2001 ProCraft 215 Combo with a Mers 225 EFI and a 5.5″ hyd JP. Currently running a 25P Tempest Plus with vent hols opened up. This prop has sad hole shot but not bad a WOT but does seam to take lots of trim and JP adjustments for a smooth ride. Out of the hole I am able to get 4400RPM with 62 mph at 5800 rpms.

    I do have 4 batteries in the rear with big fuel tank. Needing a better prop for water sports and open water speed.

    Which Brovo do you thinks would work best for my set up?


    1. Kevin,
      Bravo I XS with the 1″ vent holes. The Bravo I FS typically doesn’t vent enough for your 225 EFI. If you are low on rpm with the 25″ pitch Tempest, consider the 25″ pitch Bravo I XS. It will allow your engine to gain 150 rpm at WOT. It will also offer better planing which will really help with the water sports. If you are concerned about dropping 1.5 mph then stay with the 3 blade Tempest.

    I am looking at trying the Bravo I FS propeller what size would you recommend and or changes that I may need to do.
    I have a 2001 Ranger 520VX 225 opti max. I am currently running a 23 pitch TXP propeller 5650 rpm running 64.3 mph 25 psi water pressure. I also have a 24 pitch TXP that will run 66.3 but only turns 5400 rpm and 25 psi water pressure. My pad height is 3″ the boat has a tendency to fall off the pad in the turns and loose some bite. These are all run with tournament loads 2 talons 4 batteries 1 27 gallon fuel tank of fuel and 2 people minimal tackle. What is the minimum water pressure I could run and be safe. I loose about 1-1.5 mph when I fill the livewells.

      Consider the Bravo I XS with the 1″ vent holes. The Bravo I FS with PVS .75″ vent holes is designed for the Verado and the Pro XS equipped with the Torque Master II gearcase. It’s hard to make a pitch call with your 23″ 4 blade. If it offers similar rpm to a 23″ Tempest, then you would move up to the 24″ pitch Bravo I XS. The Bravo I XS fast work horse of a prop – even when under a medium to heavy load (live wells full). It just doesn’t care how much weight you throw at it.

  7. Dear Scott,

    I think most of these questions are from bass boat owners but I have a 26 Spectre Center Console with 300 Verado. The engine was mounted very high on a fixed offshore bracket from the factory and we dropped it down a pin. This helped a lot with ventilating in the rough water but it is still an issue. The factory supplied prop is a 21 Enertia. If I trim it up enough I can hit 6300 but I get almost no bow lift. 6050 at somewhat normal trim is about it.

    From what I am reading here, it sounds like a 22 Bravo 1 FS would be the best bet. I wouldn’t need to lower the motor any more to stop ventilating and some bow lift might give me some more top end.

    Is that about right or should I consider the Tempest?

    1. Walt,
      Your engine height can still be a factor with a 3 or 4 blade prop. Knowing you lowered the engine already; it appears the 4-blade will perform better. I agree with your thoughts regarding moving to the 22” pitch Bravo I FS. It should offer better performance over the Tempest. The addition of a fourth blade provides additional blade area for hooking up the water. This helps particularly for hole shot, on-plane performance, propeller through turns and staying on-plane at lower speeds. Hopefully, you will realize better top speeds over the 3 blade as well (it all depends on engine height). The shortened barrel of the Bravo I FS offers good bow lift (it won’t lift the stern like the stock Bravo I). for enhanced fuel economy. The Tempest and the Enertia are both great props. However, both have limitations with your set-up.

  8. Hello, I have a 2005 Ranger z22 with a 250 verado and I’m running a bravo I 24 pitch which was on the boat when I made the purchase. The issue is my RPM is 5720 59 mph with no bow lift. I’m not sure about the engine height but the cavitation plate is above the waterline when on plane. Any help with rpm and speed would be greatly appreciated.

      The stock Bravo seems too tall in pitch. We’d like to see your engine gain rpm. If you got your hands on a 24″ Bravo I FS, the engine speed should increase 200 – 300 rpm. It could also result in a 1.5 – 2 mph speed increase due to the added rpm.

  9. Additional info on question #8. The engine was 5 inches Below pad, I moved the engine up to 3 1/2 inches below pad. RPM 6020 61.5 MPH with the 24 bravo I. I did get a little more bow lift but not enough. This boat does not have a jack plate and I can’t go any higher.

      Great idea and thanks for telling us about the engine height and increased performance. This information shows how critical engine height is for performance. If you are still interested in running a Bravo I FS at the new height I would try the 25″ pitch versus the 24″. The engine will pick up another 100 to 150 rpm and should increase your speed by 1.5 mph.

  10. Hi Scott, I’ve got an older Chriscraft Stinger 2650 which has been rebuilt with two new Merc 300hp MFI Bravo 1 drives. Have been trialling props thru Merc inc Enertia Eco 21, 23, Bravo 1 22, Rev 4 21, Mirage plus 23. The boat is quite heavy at the back. Can’t get Bravo FS here (Aust) so if I order pair from the US I can’t send them back. Recently narrowed it down to Rev 4 21 and the max RPM I’m getting is around 5050rpm at 60.3mph WOT. 40mph at around 3650rpm. The Bravo’s were 58mph at 5030rpm at WOT, 40 mph at around 3600rpm but cavitated a bit when getting on the plane (pitch too high?). I liked the Bravo handling. I understand my max engine rpm’s around 5200rpm. So I’m thinking ideally with the right prop I could increase another 150rpm WOT and get a higher top end and slightly better economy at mid range? So was looking at lab 21 Rev 4’s then came across the Bravo FS on this forum.

    The bravo props had more stern lift once moving than the Rev 4’s. Ideally I’m after 40mph (cruising) at as low revs as poss and good acceleration and top end. How do you think the Bravo 1 FS would go in this scenario? And what pitch would you recommend?


    1. Andrew,
      It’s great you had the chance to try all these props. I’m surprised you haven’t been able to run the Bravo I FS. Give Troy a call at Brisbane Marine (PH 61738893033). Ask him if he has any FS props in stock or if he can get some for you to run. If you go with 23″ Bravo I FS, expect to pick up 150 to 200 rpm over the stock 22″ Bravo I. That should put you where you want to be for engine rpm. What’ll be interesting is if you see improved fuel economy with the Bravo I FS. Some of the flare on the barrel has been removed to minimize drag. This results, in most cases, with improved fuel economy. The Rev 4 has a tremendous amount of cup wrapped around the tip of the propeller. This minimizes cavitation while planing. The Bravo I doesn’t have as much cup at the tip and thus the cavitation you experienced is not from too much pitch.

  11. Thanks Scott for your reply. Actually not long after my post I decided to go with the Rev 4 21 as I’ve spent some months trialling props and decided I should really make a decision. I originally had Rev 4 19’s with the original 260 HP engines and was more than happy with them in all types of conditions. It’s a heavy deep V type hull (4000kgs+) which I’ve read the Rev 4’s are well suited to which I’ve certainly found. I’m also considering getting some Merc lab finished Rev 4 21’s to give me more revs at WOT. Do you know if these may make much of a difference to mid-range / getting onto plane? I do need a 2nd set so thinking maybe I alternate between standard Rev 4’s and lab. I know lab props results can vary boat to boat but any info / knowledge you have on these would be much appreciated! Thanks Andrew

      Thanks for the additional information. To help us understand how the Lab Finished Rev 4 could perform with your application, please forward the performance numbers of the 21″ pitch Rev 4. Please list mid-range and WOT rpm and speed. Also, how is the 21″ pitch Rev 4 in terms of boat planing performance?

    I run a 2012 620VS with a 250 HP Pro Verado, kicker etc. Currently running a 21 P Tempest plus. Not happy with the holeshot but top end is good. 61mph at about 6200 rpm. I want to run a 23 pitch Bravo 1 XS instead of the FS. I run light quite a bit of the time, would i be asking for trouble with too much venting? What are your recomendations? I am not able to fine tune the venting on the XS I beleive?

    1. Dale,
      Typically, you move up 1″ of pitch when switching from a Tempest to the Bravo I FS or XS. In your case, the use of a jack plate enables you to raise the motor enough to get your engine speed up in the 6100 to 6200 rpm range. We’ve tested the same pitch Bravo I XS (1″ non-controling vent holes) and FS (3/4″ PVS vent system) on the Nitro ZV21 with 300 Verado Pro and didn’t notice any difference between the two venting styles from hole shot to WOT. The test was done on Lake Winnebago. For Lake Erie, you may want the FS so you can limit the amount of venting when running through 6′ to 10′ waves.

        In your opinion do you think a 23 Pitch FS would hurt my holeshot significantly?Presently with the Tempest 21 it is very slow to get on plane and almost wants to dig the stern in, you are dead on in other posts regarding the Tempest, it has to be run all the way to the bottom of the jack plate. I am anxious to try the Bravo, the reason for the 23 is to sqeek a little more out of the top end..your thoughts again?

          It’s a tough call. I wish you could run one of each to see how they perform. With the information you’ve provided, I’d lean more toward the 22″ pitch than the 23″. A jack plate on your 620 helps get the maximum performance out of the prop. Keep in mind, the Bravo I FS or XS likes to run higher during planing and at WOT. There are other 620s with 250 Verados hitting 5900 to 6000 rpm with the 21″ pitch Tempest. Part of the performance is contributed by the amount of load in the boat. Did you make up your mind yet re: the FS verses XS? Again, if you run big water like Erie you’re going to want the FS. It restricts the exhaust flow running the big waves.

            I would love to run each but no one here is using the Mercury program that enables a person to try different props. I will defiantly use the FS and appreciate your advice on big water.Right now with the 21 Tempest the jack plate has to remain all the way down even at full throttle and trimed as hi as possible. I should be able to raise the engine with the Bravo and gain any RPM I lose in pitch increase. I run fairly light so I am going to gamble on the 23, if it’s too steep I will have a 23 for sale and go with the 22.

            It’s a gamble of sorts and will continue to think about it, my biggest concern was time to plane with the 23.

            I agree with you. I would also take the gamble. For planing – use the jack plate to find the sweet spot. Many people think you have to bury the prop to plane. That’s not always the case.

    I’ve been running a 21″ Tempest Plus for a couple of years on my 21″ Chris Craft Seahawk with a Yamaha F250 on a jackplate. Currently running 55 mph with 2 guys and 1/2 tank (40 gallons). Almost touching the rev limiter around 6050-6100 rpm.

    Would like to try the Bravo 1 FS to improve bite, midrange and potentially top end as well?

    What would you recommend, a 22″ or 23″ pitch? I rarely run WOT with more than two people on board, and when loaded up with 5-6 people, midrange fuel economy is more of a priority.


    1. Karl,
      Great idea to give the Bravo I FS a run. To achieve similar rpm to the Tempest, you would move up to the 22″ pitch. In your case, with the ability to increase engine height 1/2″ to 3/4″ via a jack plate, you should consider the 23″ pitch (even with the 5 – 6 passengers). You may need to remove a couple of PVS fittings to aid in planing when under heavy load.

      1. Hi,

        Had the opportunity to test the 23″ Bravo 1 FS for the first time today (brought it home from the US, in my carry on luggage…).

        Must say I’m very impressed! Did some first runs with the 21″ Tempest to establish a baseline. The boat’s been in the water since mid April, and even though it has ablative, the bottom has some growth. Top speed with the Tempest was 45,0 knots (51,8 mph) @ 6100-6150 rpm. This is 2,5-3 knots slower than this spring, when I ran 55 mph @ 6150-6200. Hole shot with the Tempest is good (medium PVS holes in all three holes), 0-30 knots around 8,5 seconds.

        First run with the Bravo, with all solid vents in, it was a bit sluggish up on plane (0-30 knots around 18 seconds), but then hooked noticeably better in the midrange. Top speed just shy of 47 knots (54 mph) @ 5950-6000 rpm, so just 100-150 rpm shy of where I was with the Tempest. Didn’t have time to play around with engine height, so this was running the same height as the highest setting that worked with the Tempest. Judging by the height of the rooster tail, I still have a bit of height left on the Bravo. 🙂

        I then replaced all four solid PVS plugs with the large open ones that came with the prop. Huge improvement in hole shot, down from 18 to 9,5 seconds, so not so far from the Tempest.

        Boat actually ran better once I found a little bit of chop, clearly indicating bottom growth slowing it down in flat water. Also much more stable at speed than with the Tempest, in itself a very worthwhile improvement.

        Overall, very impressed!

  14. I have a 2012 Z520 Ranger With a Verado 250 Pro Supercharged with 2-power poles. I’m Trying to find out what the best prop is for this set up. I currently have the Tempest with 25p, Top speed is 70mph at 6200 RPM but It is sluggish coming out of the hole. I really don’t want to lose any top speed. If I were to try a Bravo 1 FS What would be the pro’s and cons and what pitch would you recommend?

      Thanks for considering the Bravo I FS. Typically, 3 blade props are faster than 4 bladers until boats get loaded up (power poles, battery, full fuel and all the gear). You know the drill. It is with heavy loads where the 4 blade shines. The Bravo I FS is designed to lift the complete hull. It provides bow lift like a 3 blade; and just the right amount of stern lift for enhanced performance under heavy loads. It’s offered in 1″ pitch increments and designed to produce like rpm as the smaller 3-blade prop it is replacing. For example, a move from a 25″ Tempest would equate to a 26” pitch Bravo I FS (they run a little light in pitch). When switching to the 4-blade, expect to raise the engine up on the transom (.5″ or .75″) above where you ran the 3 blade. The Bravo I FS excels at the elevated transom heights – providing faster hole shots and higher top end speeds. The PVS (vent fittings) can be removed to increase engine rpm during planing. For the speed you should see 69 to 70 mph. Just for education, a 25″ Bravo I FS would raise you engine speed by 150 rpm. Hole shot would be quick – but your top end speed would drop down to 67 to 69 mph.

    I own a Concept 27 Center Console: 25ft long no step with 2ft bracket and jack lift.

    I recently swaped my Verado 300 Pro for a 350 sci (EC Version)

    The Pro ran between 47 and 52 knots with Rev4 19 pitch at 6.050rpm.
    Sweeet hole shot and midrange punch, loved that set up!
    With Temptest 21 she was even faster but missing some torque.

    Now with the 350sci I still get the 52 knots at 6.800 rpm hitting the limiter
    BUT missing punch in hole shot and midrange.

    A lot of slip I thought – and tried a Rev4 21.
    But punch didn`t increase and I only made poor 6.200 rpm.
    And the boat started to bounce at various rpm…

    Will the BRAVO 1 Verado fit my rig?
    If yes, what pitch would be good for max torque but no slip?

    1. Jan,
      Guten tag, something is not adding up with the before and after set up information. If both engines are equipped with a 1.75 gear ratio and run the same 19” pitch Rev 4 it doesn’t make sense for the 350 rpm to jump 750 rpm over the 300 set up. The propeller slip for the 300 is at 9% and the 350 at 16% slip; gearcase can offer 1 to 2% added slip but 7% seams excessive. If the prop is in good condition slip can from the motor being too high or buried deep in the water; in your case it might be too high. The Bravo I FS could be a way to go but first figure out where the prop slip is coming from.

  16. I have a crestliner fishhawk 1850 with a new merc 150 4s. currently running a 19p tempest 5500 rpm @ 49 mph. I do not have a jack plate will a 20p bravo 1 fs and raising the engine 1 hole help with my set up? will speed improve any?

      Thanks for supplying the numbers; they help me understand how the Tempest is working with your rig. The top speed it’s going to be tough to beat with the Tempest; but raising the engine 1/2″ to 3/4″ and running the Bravo I FS should offer added engine rpm so you may see 5600 rpm gaining .5 to 1 mph. If you’re looking for less bow lift during planing (not losing the horizon), trim ability (tucking the engine in) at mid-range allowing the boat to do its job cutting the big waves instead of bouncing on top more consideration should be given to the Bravo I FS. And you’re spot on for pitch, replacing the 19″ with the 20″ Bravo I FS.

  17. I have a crestliner 1850 fish hawk. Currently running a 19p tempest runs 5450@ 49 mph. Would a 20p bravo 1 fs run any better? I do not have a jack plate. Would the bravo allow me to raise the motor 1 more hole up( about 3/4 inch)?

      Sorry we missed your question. This may have been due to our transitioning to our new website. Can you provide me with details regarding your engine height? An easy way to get that is to park the boat on level ground using the trailer jack. Level the bottom of the boat, hold a small level or smart phone with level app to the boat bottom. Now trim the engine so the cavitation plate is level. Measure the distance from the bottom of the cavitation plate to the floor and subtract the measurement from the bottom of the boat to the floor. Send me your height and the engine you’re running. With that information I should be able to answer your question.

  18. Scott: I’m confused. I have a 2014 Ranger Z520C-250 Pro XS, Torquemaster 2 on a 8″ Bobs hydraulic plate. I currently run a 25″ Fury and am satisfied with how it performs. I’m looking for a prop for big water (Lake Michigan, Sturgeon Bay) that will keep the nose up a little bit better and climb waves better. First I was told a 26″ Bravo 1FS would do the trick. Then I was told the XS is the way to go. I thought the XS was not for the new gear case. Can you settle this question for me? Which prop? Also if the FS1 is the answer can you suggest a plug configuration to start out with? Thank you for your time and your assistance.

      Thanks for the question. It’s been a challenge for all of us. Depending on the load and load displacement – it could go either way. The prop style is dependent on the Torque Master II and if it causes ventilation as the boat rolls onto plan. In the past, with the original Torque Master, the Bravo I XS was the answer. However, with the Torque Master II – the Bravo I XS can over vent during roll over. If the Fury planes well with all vent holes open and presents no issues with over venting (cavitation) then the Bravo I XS is the ticket. But if the Fury vents or cavitates during roll over (even with adjusting the vent holes) then the Bravo I FS is the answer (with all holes open). The Fury runs heavy in pitch and the Bravo I’s run low in pitch. To equal the 25” pitch Fury’s rpm – run the 27” pitch. However, if you need to gain 150 rpm – drop down to the 26” pitch. Keep in mind – the Bravo I FS/XS props like to run higher than the Fury. Plan on raising the engine .5” – .75” (test to determine appropriate height). And since you’re in the part of the country that’s making ice, let’s make your decision easier. In February at the Miami Boat show Mercury Racing will be unveiling the upgraded Bravo I XS with our controllable vent system. The new Bravo I XS will be available in April.

  19. We run a 2014 ZV21 fully loaded and have been trying to get some speed but to no avail. We have the motor up to cavitation point using the plain Bravo 1 . Best we get is 57 @ 5800 rpm. We tried a Tempest and lost top end also with a Rev4 . Our Bravo 1 is a 22 pitch that came with the boat so our next move is to a 6 inch hydronic jack plate and we just heard about the fs. Question is stay with the 22 or go to 21 and try for more rpm? Love this boat but we want more mph is that possible?

      You have a great boat. I was fortunate to test ride in Keith Kavajecz’s last year when we introduced the 20” and 21” pitch Bravo I FS. The 21” pitch is the ticket. Grab one of these first before mounting the jack plate. Let us know if you go the jack plate route; I would like to see your before and after performance numbers.

      The Bravo I XS with the (8) PVS vent holes is preferred for your 1.62 Sport Master. The (8) vent holes will offer better planing than the (4) vent holes in the Bravo I FS. Other than that, the props are the same. Tough to beat the Trophy, especially the 25″ pitch. The only prop that might beat it is the 24″ pitch Pro Max and if it does it’s not going to be by much.

      Thanks for checking. Many in your camp are running the Bravo I FS. Typically – I would recommend the 24” pitch FS to achieve similar rpm to your 23” pitch. However, when I enter your numbers into the slip calculator – your set up is high in slip. Just to double check – can you confirm your numbers? i.e. 23” pitch, 1.75 gear ratio, 5700 rpm and 57 mph? Any idea how high your engine is?

      1. sorry took so long, not sure on gear ratio, prop is 23×14.1/2 Yamaha, 5700, top speed 57 have seen 59, engine is on 2 hole, the hole shot is bad. seem almost like it cant wind up to jump out of hole. I have seen forms they use mercury vented props? but I don’t know a lot about them.

          If you’re looking to gain planing performance and 150 rpm the 23″ pitch Bravo I FS will be the ticket. The Bravo I FS is equipped with (4) PVS holes which will allow you to adjust the amount of venting required for good planing. For example take out two (2) of the solid fittings to see if that’s the correct amount of venting for quick planing. If you need more venting, take another fitting out. The vent holes work only for planing, once on plan the holes don’t do anything.

          1. Hi Scott, I just installed the Bravi 1 FS on my boat. While pulling the kids around on the tube and engine completely trimmed in I was hearing the prop cavitate. The prop came with solid PVS. Should I look at removing them ? And if so does this change top end?

            The vent holes are used to allow exhaust to aerate the propeller for improved planing (mainly two strokes). Consider trimming the engine out a small amount during water sports activities there might be some issue with water flowing from the bottom of the boat into the propeller. Back to the vent fittings, they don’t change a thing for top speed.

  23. Just recently added a 12′ Talon to my 2014 Z7 w Merc 150 4Stroke. Currently running a Tempest 23p (stock) no jack plate. In order to install the Talon the shop had to move the motor up 1 hole due to the motor would not sit down over the transom w the sandwich bracket. Now I am playing hell getting on plane, plowing water. 20 gal of fuel, tournament gear, me + co angler. 56+\-mph up/down river on the Mississippi 5200rpm on pad. Shop didn’t think I would hardly notice a difference but WOW! NO HOLE SHOT at all. Looking at options, thoughts???? Thanks in advance.

      Moving your engine up .75″ is typically the right amount for moving from the 3-blade to the 4-blade Bravo I FS. This prop is noted for carrying heavier loads and working at elevated engine heights. You’ll gain 150 rpm over the 23″ pitch Tempest with the 23″ pitch Bravo I FS. The 23″ Bravo I FS will allow engine to run in the middle of the rpm range. If you want to gain another 150 rpm drop to the 22″ pitch Bravo I FS. Planing performance improves with the lower the pitch but – with the 22″ you might give up 1.5 mph on the top.

  24. I’ve got a ranger 620 tiller with a 200 verado. Tried the original 22 bravo 1 and pulled 5750 @ 52 mph. Was wondering what pitch you think I should order in the bravo fs. I was thinking the 21 pitch should put me where I wanna be. Thanks

      The 21″ pitch Bravo I FS should offer an additional 150 rpm and the 20″ pitch another 150 rpm. Consider the 20″ pitch.

  25. I have a 2006 Ranger 621 with a evinrude etec 225 ho. I currently can only pull 5100 rpm at 51.5 mph. I currently am running a 23 pitch tempest plus. Would a bravo prop help? What pitch and model.

      We sell more Bravo I FS to Etec owners than I can say, thanks to a Ranger dealer in Green Bay, WI. I thought that boat came with a 21” pitch prop. Your engine rpm seems low. I believe the recommended range is 5250 to 6000 and the sweet spot is close to 5700. This prop carries a heavy load well.The low end torque of your engine takes advantage of the blade design – resulting with incredible acceleration. The prop offers impressive fuel economy and good top speeds. Many don’t think the ride of the boat can be improved via a prop change. You would be surprised! The 4 blade reduces the excessive bow lift you experience with 3-blade props, resulting with a safer ride in big water. When going with the same pitch you can expect to gain 150 rpm compared to the Tempest. Every one inch change in pitch will affect engine speed by 150 rpm.   26. I am currently running a lund 208 with a 300 pro verado. I installed a bravo 1 fs 22 pitch. I absolutely love the prop when its calm or a 2 ft chop. Got more speed and better control then the tempest. When I get in a little rougher water, the bow wants to jump and “smack” the waves rather then get on top and cut them.

    Has anybody here ran into that issue? I don’t have a jack plate. Some say it will help, others say it will make it worse cause of the weight being farther in the back.

    Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

      Wondering where your engine height is? Can you send me the distance from the bottom of the boat to the bottom of the cavitation plate? The cavitation plate method involves leveling the boat and the engine. Using a small level, hold it up to the bottom of the boat (very bottom not the set back) – using the trailer jack to level the boat. Measure the distance from the bottom of the boat to the floor. Trim the engine down – placing the level on the cavitation plate (the fin above the propeller), to level the engine. From the underside of the cavitation plate – measure the distance to the floor. Subtract the boat bottom measurement from the cavitation plate measurement to obtain the distance.

      The 22” pitch Bravo I FS should offer similar rpm as the 21” pitch Tempest. For improved planing, consider the 21” pitch. It will also increase your engine speed by 150 rpm. Depending on your engine height, (key part of the article) the Bravo I FS will be faster while offering a better ride and planing without the bow rise you experience with a 3-blade. That Bravo I FS will be awesome on your rig.

    What Bravo works best on 2014 ranger 621 300 verado with kicker power pole 5 bateries, bow troller and full tournament load with 2-3 guys. Get about 58 out of a 21 tempest 6100rpm and 57 6350rpm out of a 19 tempest. Would I loose speed going to a Rev 4?

      Just last week I ran a Ranger 621FS with 300 Verado Pro. We had two guys, a light load and the standard 21″ Tempest. The Tempest gave us 6200 rpm at 55-56 mph. We then installed a 21” pitch Bravo I FS. The Bravo I FS offered a noticeable improvement in overall performance. On plane performance was quick and flat. The bow rise was slight. The engine speed increased 150-180 rpm – bringing it up to 6380 rpm. What’s really cool is we increased speed to 59-60 mph and saw it tick to 61 mph from time to time. This prop is amazing, you’ll really enjoy it.

  29. Scott, I picked up a 31 fountain center console this summer. Its a non step hull with merc 250efi’s and has 4 blade 23p merc offshore series props. I have owned a half dozen offshore boats and on first run in it I could tell it wasn’t propped right. After doing some searches on a couple different sites I found the best engine mounting height (middle hole) and made the adjustment. So now at wot im getting 5800 rpms at 60 mph, At 4000 rpm im getting 37 mph with with @ 140 gallons of fuel. In most of the searches I did, most guys were getting 42 mph at 4000 rpm and closer to 65mph. Fountains spec sheet shows 67.8 mph at 5600 rpm and 48mph @ 4000 rpm running rev4 23’s and of course fresh motors and little gas on board im guessing . Then there’s a lot of guys running stock bravo 1’s too. Im having a hard time making up my mind on which way to go,rev4 ?. This bravo 1 fs sounds good too. Could you give me so input would be great.       The Revolution 4 and Bravo I FS will offer better performance over the Offshore and Bravo I. The stock Bravo I’s barrel flare at wide open throttle and lift the stern while pushing the bow down. The bow attitude can be overcome with additional trim. The enhanced trim angle is not as efficient as Rev 4 and Bravo I FS. The 23″ pitch Rev 4 will drop engine rpm because of it’s larger diameter and blade area. Fountain’s information listing the drop to 5600 rpm sounds reasonable – but the speed of 67.5 mph seems high. Sixty three to 64 mph is doable. Comparing the FS to the Rev 4, if the 23″ pitch Rev offers 5600 rpm; the 24″ FS should offer 5750 to 5800 rpm and the 25″ FS should offer 5600 rpm. It’s hard to say which style will work the best because of boat bottom design and engine height. I’m leaning toward the 23” pitch Rev 4.

  30. 1998 Bass Cat jaguar 2015 Mercury 250 Pro xs TM . Has 26 Fury on it now no hole shot .If and when you get her up she will run about 70mph gps 5300 rpm. Then she goes to chim walking bad. Center of prop shaft is 3″ below the pad. This boat is real heavy in the rear. I think I am going try one of the Bravo 1 xs 25p you think this will help

      Sorry for the delayed response. It’s been crazy good and busy. You’re heading in the right direction with the 25P Bravo I XS. This pitch will increase your engine speed by approximately 450 rpm – reving your engine up to the 5750+ rpm range. The Bravo I XS carries the heavy load extremely well. The 4-blade design will enhance your overall boat handling. If your engine is maxed out at 5300 rpm with the 26P Fury, dropping to a 25P Bravo I XS is the right choice.

      1. Thanks tried it out today got the rpms raising the motor is helping chim walking seems like it is trying to blow out on hole shot takes it a while to get up the rpms to get up on the plane. I thought these props had 1″ holes this one measures 3/4″

          The Bravo I FS has (4) .75″ PVS vent holes and the Bravo I XS (8) .75″ PVS vent holes. It sounds like you picked up a FS. The XS props ventilate more – offering a better hole shot.

    First off, thanks so much for your time! This thread is amazing! With that said, I just purchased a 2015 212ls with a 250 Vrod Pro. The prop it comes with is a 21p Revo 4 blade. The factory claims 64mph. I haven’t picked up the boat yet, do you have any experience with this boat? Is this the best prop for hole shot and top speed?

      The 21P Rev 4 should offer good all-around performance for your Ranger. A 4 blade is the way to go for your boat. Which one depends on the performance you actually achieving. When you get a chance – send me your performance numbers at full throttle (rpm, speed and the load in the boat – light or heavy).

          The Rev 4 is doing pretty good. it’s hard for me to say the Bravo I FS would benefit you. If you had a chance to run a 22” or 23” pitch Bravo I FS – I’d surely give it a spin. I’m thinking you could see a 2 – 3 mph increase.

  32. Hi Scott, I have a 205 Triton with a 225 Honda. Just put on a 22 P Bravo 1 fs. The boat runs 54.6 at 6000 rpms. I am happy with how it handles but still a little sluggish with loaded live wells and a companion in the boat. My question is do you recommend playing around with the PVS plugs on a four stroke?

    1. Mike,
      Some four strokes could use a little help during planing. Try opening one PVS hole completely and run the boat to see if there is any improvement. Remove the PVS plugs with a socket extension – knocking them into the propeller (trim the outboard so the plugs roll out the back). If you don’t see a change in performance after removing one plug – try another. Continue the process until you get the performance you desire. You may need to replace the used plugs.

  33. Hi Scott, I run a 205 Triton mated with a 225 Honda. In an effort to improve performance I put on a manual jackplate with a 3 3/4″ set back. I have recently put on a Bravo 1FS 22P and I am very happy with the performance so far. I have the prop shaft 2 1/2″ below the pad, solid vent plugs and the best I have ran is 55.7 mph @ 6050 rpm’s. The hole shot suffers when I have extra weight in the boat like a partner and full live wells and I was wondering if you would have any suggestions as to how this could be improved.       I replied to your earlier comment regarding the PVS vent system. In followup with this comment, You may get better results with the 21″ pitch Bravo I FS. The 21P will offer a better hole shot with those heavy loads.

  34. I bought a 1995 Mirage Trovare 232 with a 385 HP 454 MPI. It’ currently running a 23 mirage plus. Runs low 60’s, best of 65 apparently. I’m in Canada, can’t test it for a few months. I was going to get a labbed mirage 25, but maybe the Bravo 1 FS would work well? Maybe a 24? I’m also am planning on going with Aluminum exhaust manifolds and drycell batteries (2) so the rear should be significantly lighter. Any thoughts? Thanks

      The Bravo I FS is a great choice for replacing the Mirage. It will offer bow lift similar to the Mirage (for good top speed) as well as a quicker hole shot. The FS is designed to move up one inch of pitch meaning, the 24” pitch FS would produce the same results as the 23” pitch Mirage. If you’re currently reaching top rpm with the 23” pitch, you might consider the 25” pitch FS (a drop of 150 rpm compared to the 24” pitch).

      We have a 2015 Ranger 621 FS test boat. We are running a 21″ pitch Bravo I FS. We’re getting 58.1 mph at 6130 rpm (light load). Your engine has an rpm range of 5300 – 6000. A 22″ pitch prop would get you 5950 to 6000 rpm. The Bravo I FS has (4) vent holes which will enable you to dial-in the precise amount of venting required for a great hole shot.

    I have a 35 foot Marlago with twin 2013 Suzuki 300’s. I am currently running Enertia ECO’s in 21 pitch and my RPMs are just about right at 6000rpm and 56 mph at WOT. My issue is that the props loose grip when I turn the steering wheel slightly. Would going to Bravo 1 FS props help with the grip issue? There is no transducer or water pickup in front of the motors. I have also played with the motor alignment and had no effect. Engine height was change too with no effect. Also, should I go with 22 pitch or 24 pitch on the Bravo 1 FS props? I have run Revolution 4’s in 23 pitch and they ran about the same RPM and speed as the ECO’s in 21 pitch.

      It’s great you looked at all the issues, i.e. transducers, engine height etc. If the Rev 4 ran similar rpm then, yes – go with the 24″ pitch Bravo I FS. It will stay hooked up.

    I’m needing some direction here- I’m running a 2013 621VS with the 300 PRO- 21 pitch, Bravo 1 FS (all vent holes plugged)

    RPM’s- 5800, speed 52.6- full trim

    Outboard is mounted in 2nd hole down
    Light weight- 1/2 fuel cell and 2 guys

    I have yet to check the height from the vent plate above the hull

    needing to increase that RPM closer to the 63-6350 range I’m hoping with out sacrificing any speed,

    Sittning in Sweden and is reading this thread. I have a 20ft bowrider with deep V as a tournament fishing boat. Fully loaded with Talon, electric motor etc she is 2600lb. Motor is a remapped Verado 175 that delivers 230hp. Before remap I hit 49mph using Enertia 19 at 6300rpm. After I can go 54mph using Enertia 21 at 6500rpm. At superligth load I can see almost 56 at 6550rpm. The boat sits very stabil in the water and not so much bowlift. Have a hydraulic jackplate and to reach top speed I lower the motor and trim out. Best cruising speed is when the motor is 2″ up. I would like to to go faster and do you think a bravo 1 would be the trick? And if so what could suit my setup?

      Hard to say. The Bravo I FS offers bow lift like the 3 blade but it also offers a little stern lift as well. Many boats do perform better with Bravo I FS lifting more of the boat out of the water for enhanced speed and, in some cases, a better ride. But will your boat benefit? You’re going to have to try a 21” pitch to see.

      1. But do you suggest that I try 21″ pitch on the bravo FS. With the Enertia 21″ I do 6500rpm at full throttle and I was thinking about talking the rpm down a bit to 6200-6400 for a faster ride. Do you think that the 21 bravo FS will have the same rpm as the Enertia 21?

          The rpm is going to be similar when at the same engine height as the Enertia. However, I think you will be able to raise the engine .5″ to 1″ higher when running the Bravo I FS (youur engine speed may increase by 50 – 75 rpm). Let’s awesome the engine turns 6550 rpm at an increased height with a 21″ pitch Bravo I FS. If that is the case, then a 23″ pitch should lower your engine speed by 300 rpm; or 6250 rpm.

The problem is it came with a reworked 21P tempest(cupping is ground down 1/4″), I’m able to run 5350 RPM and 52-53 MPH, standard load, two guys and a moderate hole shot. My question is : do I throw out the reworked prop numbers ? They seem low compared to other Rangers. What Bravo prop would you recommend if you were setting up from scratch? Would it be possible to run 22P XS? Thanks for your time and a very helpful website!

      Thanks for the questions. I think you’re spot on with the 22” pitch Bravo I XS. The jack plate is going to give you the opportunity to take full advantage of the Bravo I. The 4 blade likes to run high – even while planing. For vent fittings, you might want to install two (2) solid (toward the rear); leaving the rest open.

    spinning 5500 going around 72 mph
    boat is a bit bow heavy

    1. Alexis,
      Amazing you can swing the 27 Tempest at 5500 rpm. If you’re getting good hole shot, I’m not sure I would change anything. If you were interested in getting up to the 5800 to 5900 rpm, a 25” pitch Tempest would be the appropriate pitch. From there, if you’re looking at the 4 blade to gain a little rpm, the 26.5” pitch Bravo I XS should be the ticket. Why the 26.5” pitch? With some rpm gain and by raising the engine (usually you can raise the engine .75’ to 1.25” up from the 3 blade) you could be looking at reaching 5800 rpm and achieving similar speeds along with a great hole shot. Where some of the performance gains are how the props lift the boats; a 3 blade is all bow lift. The 4 blade offers bow lift along with a little stern lift. What will your boat like best?

    I have ordered a new Ranger 2510 Bay with a Verado 350 and the mercury tests show it with a Enertia ECO 17 pitch turning 6400 @ 52 .3 mph. I should have the boat shortly and I am interested in the Bravo 1fs. Do you think this will be a good prop for this set up? and if so, what size would you recommend? thank you

      Run the boat as you would normally load it (fuel, gear and people) and let us know what you get for performance (rpm and speed at WOT).

    I have a 33 foot stepped hull RIB with two Honda BF250 and revolution 4 propeller with 25″ pitch. The WOT is at 6050-6100 and the boat runs at 56 knots. Tried also the bravo I with 24″ pitch with the WOT being at 6000-6050. Overall performance and consumption was similar with two notable changes in favor of bravo being the smoother ride in head wind and the better performance when testing single engined (35 knots instead of 26).
    I am now looking to buy the bravo I FS. What is your view on the pitch I should select? If it would help, I can send you over email an excel with detailed measurements per RPM.

      The Bravo I FS barrel length is shorter than the standard Bravo I and, in most cases, this results in better fuel economy and increased top speeds (flare on the end of the barrel can cause drag). Expect an increase in engine speed by 75-100 rpm when running the 25″ pitch Bravo I FS. Engine rpm will drop when switching up to the 26″ pitch FS. The 26″ pitch FS will provide the best fuel economy and boat speed if your engine run within its optimal rpm range.

    I have a 2014 Ranger 621VS with a 300 etec,15Hp kicker, and im getting 5400RPM @52-53MPH with full load and 3 adults. Has ok hole shot. This RPM is right from Etec via interface cable. It has a 3 blade stainless rebel 15×21 on it now. Which Pitch bravo FS would you recommend ?

      It seems the engine is a little low in rpm so going with the 21″ pitch Bravo I FS rpm should increase your engine speed by 150 rpm. You may have to raise the engine one hole to get maximum performance from the FS. Start at your current height to get a bench mark. If the current height works – don’t change a thing.

    i run a 2008 ranger 620 with a 250 Verado it is chipped to 300hp
    i am running a 23 tempest, With a full load I run 6250 rpm and 63mph. Would I gain any more rpm and mph by running a 24 pitch FS


    1. Jim,
      Moving up 1″ of pitch to the 24″ Bravo I FS should achieve the same rpm as the Tempest. The Bravo I FS will run a little better with the engine at a higher setting compared to the Tempest (usually 3/4″ ~ one hole up), resulting with a minimum of 100 rpm increase in engine speed. At that height, you could see a speed increase of 1.5 mph. However, if you raise the engine to the same height and gain too much rpm then consider the 25″ Bravo I FS. You could realize another 1 mph. You’ll also going to enjoy the ride with the Bravo I FS over the 3 blade.

  45. I’m running a 32 Donzi ZF twin step hull. 25″ shaft motors. 225 four strokes. Initially running 24P Bravo 1 props, planed horribly, never seemed grab at any point, prop slip was around 26% at WOT. Put a set of 21P Rev 4’s. Boat planed a lot better, the motors are mounted high. If the FS props run higher it would help me even more I believe. I run heavy usually, fishing and multiple fat fishing/drinking buddies. I’m looking for better fuel economy and less slip. Trying to figure out the sweet spot before pulling the $1300 trigger. Boat was running 4500 at 35 knots. Should I play with the vent holes on the rev 4’s for a better hole shot?

    you recommended a 21″ bravo, I forgot to mention my motor is at the very top hole, so no more raising it. I have about 15 hrs on the motor now, so I know its broke in properly, and I’m still seeing the same numbers as above. Would you still recommend the 21 bravo, knowing that my motor is up as far as it will go ?? Thanks for the info, I’m getting ready to order my new prop now that its broken in.

      I prefer you stick with the 21″ pitch to get the rpm up for a better hole shot and top speed. Handling will be so much better when compared to the 3-blade. enjoy.

    I have a contender 25bay w f300, step-thru tower, 5 batts, duel powerpoles, bobs jackplate and have run Eco 19 and rev 4 19.

    3/4 tank (67 gallons) 2 adults normal gear the Eco 19 hit 5.7k and around 56mph

    1/2 tank (45gallons) same as above the rev 4 hit 6.1k and also around 56 mph

    I’m considering trying the rev 4 in 21 or maybe having the 19 increased to 20. Do you think I could see gains or even swing the Bravo l fs? Thank you!

      The ECO props run tall in pitch compared to the Rev 4 so a 21” pitch Rev 4 should offer similar rpm to the 19 ECO with a possible gain of 1.5 mph to 57.5. Because of the size of the 25’ Contender, I would lean toward the 23” pitch Bravo I LT. That set up should benefit from more stern lift than the FS could offer, lifting the complete boat for good top speed. If all works right, you could see a bump in speed – up to 58.5 mph!

    I have a Ranger 210 Reata (21′ 4″) with a 225 Verado. When I ordered the boat Ranger put on a Bravo 1 26 Pitch. I know I am lacking hole shot and would like to get to 6200 RPM at the top end. the engine is lagging enough we believe that is why it was blowing pencil coils. Currently the boat runs 5300 RPM at 52MPH. I tried a Rev 4 at I believe was a 24 p and it ran 5500 RPM at 53MPH. I did run another Bravo 1 22 p that had $800 of custom work done to it at the Mercury shop for the sales mans cigarette boat. It ran in the 6600-6800 at 56mph but I doubt that is a good comparison since I have no idea what was done to it. I do have a 15HP Pro Kicker on the boat which puts more weight in the back but even with the 26 p the front end line of site is good. I was thinking around a 22 pitch by all the reading I have done on this site. What are you thoughts on a Bravo 1 FS and what pitch?

      The Bravo I FS is a great option but I think our new Bravo I LT will be even better. The longer barrel will offer added bow lift with a little stern lift as well. For the pitch, there isn’t enough information. However, let’s say you can hit 53 to 54 mph. I’m leaning toward the 20.5” pitch LT.

    I have a 2013 contender 25 bay, double stepped hull w Yamaha f300 25 inch on bob’s 10inch jp, step thru tower, 5 batts. Holds 90 gallons. I’ve run the following props and am waiting for a 21 pitch tempest plus to arrive for testing this friday. I’m wondering if you think I would see any performance gains trying the FS?

    Turbo 2+2 OT 13.75×22, 45 gallons +2 adults no TM 5.4k, 53-54mph

      When we spoke regarding your set up we were leaning toward 21” pitch Bravo I FS. I think the recently released 21” pitch Bravo I LT might be the better choice. The longer barrel should benefit the single engine large, wide beam Contender with planing, cruising speed and good top end numbers.

Everything I read in all mercury/Lund literature shows 48-52mph. I plan on buying a Bravo 1 FS prop but want to figure the stock setup out before I start buying $600 props. Any ideas?

    1. Bill,
      Thanks for the additonal information. In running the numbers, the prop is generating a great deal of slip. Either the prop is damaged or your current engine height could be too high for the aluminum prop (aluminum props have design limitations and don’t have as much cup as a steel prop). Keep the engine at that height to run. I would have you go back to the 19” pitch Enertia (not Eco I’m just not confident that you can swing the 20” pitch Bravo I FS. FYI, the 20” FS should drop 200 rpm from the 19” Enertia.

  51. Hey Scott, I have a 24 ft Spectre just under 2,000lbs less engine …. I’m running 73.5mph with a 300xs and a 25p ProMax prop… some people have been telling me to try the Bravo 1 FS… in reading the descriptions of both props it says the ProMax is more for lighter boats with natural bow lift and the Bravo is better for medium to heavier loads…. is my boat considered more of the medium to heavier load at 2,000 lbs? Do you think the Bravo will help me see faster top end? I’m chasing that magic number 75mph!! Thanks for you time! Happy Holidays!

      If you get the chance to try a Bravo I XS or FS in 26” or 27” pitch, try it. I can’t say the Bravo I style of prop will be faster. Usually, the Pro Max is the faster prop by 2 – 3 mph.

  52. I have a 2016 216 Triton Fishunter with a 300 Verado. I have a Bravo 4 blade FS with a 23 pitch. The cavitation plate is 3.25 inches higher than the bottom of the boat. The most RPMs I can get is 5650. I can get upto 63 mph in the right conditions but most of the time at 59 mph. I was wondering if I raise the motor a little more would that help me get the RPMs up closer to like 5800 and also increase the speed? Also If I do raise it will that negatively effect the boats perform in rough water? Trying to find the sweet spot. What would you recommend for motor height? thanks

    1. Brad,

      Are you running a jack plate? With the 350, most guys are running 3.5 inches above. I would not go higher than that. I agree the RPM is low, the only other way to gain RPM is to drop pitch. This would improve your holeshot but top speed is about as good as it will get.

      Consider the 22 pitch Bravo I XS. It is the same prop as the Bravo I FS, but with a total of eight vent holes for increased planing performance in two stroke applications. Because you have a jack plate, you will be able to raise the engine and utilize the extra diameter and fourth blade. Expect to gain 2 mph and much better boat control.


      1. Nick, I will be ordering the wheel you recommended today. BTW, I have another question. The steering wheel on my cc is on the port side of the center console. Even if I have another adult who weighs the same as me, the boat rides to port. I have moved what gear I can, including both batteries and the remote oil tank, to the starboard to balance things out. I still have to use a good amount of tab which scrubs speed. Is my port lean something inherent in the hull or can a RH prop riding high also push the boat over to port? Thanks!

          Sounds great. I’m a little stumped on your balance issue. Double check your engine is level, jack plate is level, and your bolt holes are straight and dead center on your transom. It doesn’t sound like a prop issue and I don’t think the new prop will help with that.

    I have a 04 stratos 201 pro xl with a 2019 250 pro xs 4 stroke. Right now running a 26 bravo1 xs 5500rpms fully load at 71 mph. Would I be better going with a 24 or 25 bravo fs or xs?

    1. Jon,

      That prop is hooking up extremely well, 8% slip! Consider the 24 pitch Bravo I FS. That will get your RPMs into the power curve while also improving hole shot and acceleration. The FS is the same propeller as the XS, only with four vent holes instead of eight. You will not need eight vent holes with the new 250 four stroke.

      1. Thanks for answering my request. The only thing that was bothering me was is the trophy plus is only 13” diameter stepping up 1” would be 151/4”x 25 you think It will be ok!

          It is because the Bravo family runs light in pitch compared to other propellers such as the Tempest and Trophy Plus. Your engine height also sounds appropriate for the larger diameter of the Bravo to help you stay hooked up.


  56. 2400 Checkmate Pulsare closed deck with a 300R only 5 hours runtime. For some reason the 300R just won’t push that boat. Bravo 1 FS 24P at 6200 rpm is only 72 mph. Hydraulic plate and the prop shaft was about 3.5″ below. Would a ProMax run faster? Would like to get the boat to 75 mph if possible.

      Awesome boat, which gear case are you running? 72 mph sounds about right for that package considering they run low 80’s with a 400R. Can you raise the engine any higher for a gain in RPM? 10% with the Bravo I FS sure is hard to beat.


  57. I have a Vexus 1980 Center Console aluminum boat with Mercury 150 Fourstroke. Running a Tempest Plus 23 pitch prop 52 gps at 5500 RPM. Prop is 4 1/2” below pad. If I trim up, prop throws tall rooster tail and no bow lift. At all speeds cannot get not get on pad. I tried lowering engine on 6” jack plate to 5.5” , but then RPM down to 5000 and only 48 mph, no help. Do you think a Bravo 1 FS could help!

      Consider the 23.5 pitch Bravo I FS. Start with the prop 4 inches below the pad, you may be able to go as high as 3.5 inches. The fourth blade and bigger diameter really allow you to run the engine higher without losing grip. Expect speed gains of 2-4 mph.


      1. You were spot on. On my Vexus 1980 I put 23 pitch Bravo 1 FS, ended up raising my engine 2” above the Tempest 23. Now 3.5” prop below pad, 5800 RPM, Great bow lift and hole shot is instant, i went from 52 mph to 56 mph. Could not be more happy with overall performance, i can get on pad at any speed and cannot make it loose grip. Awesome prop!!!

      2. I have a 2017 nitro zv21, 300 verado, manual jack plate and 21p tempest. Ordered new from factory with no changes. Only getting 5700 rpm wot. Would like to get closer to spec of around 6100. Speed is ok at around 56 and hole shot is decent. Just concerned about long term damage to motor which is still under warranty. Considering the bravo 1 FS. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

          You are not going to hurt the engine but there is definitely performance left on the table. I think you are right on the money with a 21 pitch Bravo I FS. As long as you can get to 5900+ RPM, you will be in the sweet spot for that engine. The FS will like to run 3/4″ to 1″ higher than the Tempest.


  58. Its a TorqueMaster . If I use 23.4 for the pitch I get closer to 8%. Actually, at 3.5″ below and 3000 rpm it slips bad and is only 24 mph. Lower it another 0.75″ and it comes up to 30 mph at the same 3000 rpm. Do you think I should bring it up to say 5000 rpm and then try and raise it until the speed drops, and then try WOT run? I was hoping I could run the ProMax prop much higher like perhaps 1.5″ below? I was hoping with the right prop and height, this combination would hit 75 mph but perhaps that is wishful thinking?

      I was thinking 3.25 or 3.00 below would be your best for top end speed. It would be great if you could try a Pro Max but I don’t think there is more speed to be had with it. 6200-6250 RPM is also right where you want to be with the 300R.

          A 24 pitch Lab Finish Pro Max may work, but I can’t say you’d gain more than 2 mph. An Allison dealer such as Fastbass Marine could have one that you can try out.


          1. I was hoping I could raise the engine more to gain some rpm. If you take into account that I might be able to raise the engine at least 1″ – 1.5″ with the ProMax, which pitch ProMax should I start with, the 24″ like you suggested?

            I don’t think you will get there, keep in mind the Pro Max is only 14.50 diameter as opposed to the 15.25 of the Bravo I. But if you want to try it, 24 pitch is the only way to go.

            As opposed to the new 300R Sport Master applications being quite a bit different than the 300XS setups due to the size of the new gear case, you are running the same Torque Master that was on the 300XS. Speed gains over the Optimax should be minimal since the only thing changed in your setup is a small bump in horsepower. Guys running over 100 mph are seeing big gains over the 300XS because they can run the new Sport Master much higher and run the MAX5 or CNC cleaver. Of course you are still getting a lot more torque and better fuel economy with the new engine.

  60. I have a 22’Liberator with a 300r with 175 sport master I have tried over the hub exhaust props too much harmonious on takeoff for me would a 35 pitch Bravo FS be a good choice ????

      Most guys are using the MAX5 in a 33 or 34 pitch. The MAX5 is the propeller of choice for the new V8 outboards in high speed applications because the added blade and larger diameter improve efficiency.

      For mid range, the Bravo I FS should be an improvement, consider the 26.5 pitch. The increased diameter should hook up better and improve your midrange efficiency. If you have a jack plate, you may be able to raise the Bravo higher on top end for similar top end speeds as well.

    What I’ve noticed is with the Enertia Eco, it is faster and more fuel efficient with a light load but that never happens. With realistic loads it is greatly affected by weight and drops in top speed from 60 mph to 52 mph. The Rev 4 goes the same top speed pretty much whether light or heavy but is slower than the Eco when light.

    Do you think the Mercury Racing Bravo 1 FS would improve on:

    Top speed ________________
    Fuel economy ________________
    Holeshot ________________
    Midrange ________________

    If so which pitch should I buy? I’d like to get up to the max RPM for the motor which is 6400. If I did this how much would it be btter than the REV 4 in the areas listed above? Thank you

      Thanks for the great data. With how well the Rev 4 is hooking for you, if you are looking for a bump in performance, consider the Rev 4 XP. The Pro Finish gives you 150 more RPM, pitch for pitch. This give you slightly better acceleration and top speed increases. 6100 is the sweet spot for you motor. If you’d like more top end speed, you can go with the 19 pitch Rev 4 XP, expect 6100 RPM and a speed increase of 2 mph. If you’d like more hole shot and acceleration, you can stick with an 18 pitch, expecting 6250 RPM and increasing 1 mph on top end.


  63. I’ve got a force 19x with with a 300r on that I use for water ski racing. I use a 26p pro max prop as my rough water prop , full off ballast 83 mph @ 6400 rpm . If I was going to move to a bravo 1 fs what pitch would you recommend ?

      The top speed from your Pro Max will be hard to beat, however the Bravo FS typically offers better hole shot. You’ll want to go with a 27 pitch.

    I have a 2017 Triton 186 Allure with a 150hp Yamaha that’s on a manual jackplate. Boat is rigged with an 8hp kicker, 24 volt trolling motor system, with the batteries under the center rod locker.

    My prop is a 19p Temptest.

    Hole shot is decent.
    I’ve been raising the motor from the stock setting this spring and the best performance I’m seeing with 2 adults and a full tank of gas is 50mph at 6000rpm.

    I can get 50.5mph if my passenger sits in the rear jump seat instead of the passenger chair.

    I’m intrigued about the Bravo I FS after reading more about them. Curious as to your thoughts on what a 20p Bravo I FS could do for me? Better hole shot? Better MPG, Faster top end? Nothing?
    I’m hoping that I’d be able to raise the my motor another 0.5-1 inch and improve all the above.

Alright I’m here because I’m getting no where with ranger or the place I ordered my boat what I have is a ranger 198p aluminum bass boat it has pad bottom run 4 batteries with 2 power poles and have a 4in atlas jack plate I’ve been running a 21p trophy plus at 5000rpm at 46-47 mph 3 blade props never gave the boat any bow lift I have recently bit the bullet and purchase a full set lithium batteries for the boat which removed 165# from the stern. Now the boat is lacking greatly in bow lift, it was never great, I’m in need of some guidance I wont to be able to get to 5800rpm and lift the bow

    Currently I cannot raise the motor as the prop start to blow out

      Our best bow lifting props are the 3 blade Tempest or the 4 blade Bravo I FS. Either a 19 pitch in the Tempest or a 20 pitch in the Bravo I FS will raise your RPM. Typically guys will raise the engine one hole on the transom when running the Bravo.
