In our trifecta of Miami product releases propellers are always the unsung heroes. They are often forgotten about in the glitz and glamour of media conferences and product unveilings. However, it is that polished piece of art bolted onto the leg of an outboard or sterndrive that makes or breaks an engine’s performance. Performance propeller guru Scott Reichow gets it and is continually serving niche markets with new props and or enhancements to existing models. He did just that for the Miami Boat Show with the release of the all-new Pro Finish Bravo I XC propeller as well as enhancements made to the popular Bravo I XS and Pro Max props. Bravo I XC

Specifically for single outboard powered hulls, the Pro Finish Bravo I XC features a tremendous amount of blade cup offering a shorter time to plane, improved grip at lower speeds and quicker throttle response. Air entrapment flats boats particularly benefit as the larger blade area enables the engine to run at elevated transom heights – without sacrificing performance. The prop stays hooked up for quick planing and provides enhanced performance throughout the engine rpm range. The exhaust tube is designed to support planing and stability at lower speeds. New for 2015 is the addition of a second vent hole on the exhaust tube of the popular Pro Finish Bravo I XS outboard propeller. The dual holes, designed for Mercury’s patented Performance Vent System (PVS), enable the user to fine tune the amount of venting needed for quick planing.  New half-inch pitch models enable owners to fine tune their smaller performance-oriented center consoles, bay, multi-species and bass boats. And, for some applications, the half-inch pitch will offer additional bow lift for enhanced efficiency and top speed.   1. Scott: I spoke with you on the phone 2 weeks ago and now I’m really confused. My boat is a 2014 Ranger Z520C- 250 ProXS-8″ Bobs hydraulic jack plate-25″ Fury. After explaining that I spend a lot of time on Lake Michigan and Green Bay you recommended a 27″ Bravo 1XS. Pretty straight forward. Now there is the new Bravo 1XS with 1/2 inch sizes and dual PVS. Do I stick with the 27″ or go to the 27 1/2? Do you have a recommendation on PVS configuration or should I find the now old style 27″ Bravo 1 XS. Really appreciate your time and consideration on this matter.

      I appreciate you asking for more clarification. The 27″ pitch Bravo I XS is the correct pitch if you want to match the rpm of your 25” Fury (remember to test engine height – The Bravo I XS will usually run .5” to .75” higher than the Fury). The new 27.5″ pitch Bravo I XS may be too much for your engine – reducing your rpm below the sweet spot (5800 to 5900 under full load). If you needed to reduce engine speed 75 to 100 rpm, then the 27.5” is the ticket. The reason for the running change to dual PVS (Mercury’s patented Performance Vent Hole System) is to support Torque Master II gearcase applications. In some applications, such as yours, The Torque Master II runs fine with the Bravo I XS with 1″ vent holes. In other Torque Master II set ups, the Bravo I XS with single 1″ vent holes may vent excessively. A move to the Bravo I FS with the smaller .75” PVS adjustable vent holes would be the solution for this scenario. Bottom line, in April we’re trying to make it easier for all Mercury OptiMax ProXS and Mercury Racing OptiMax 300XS outboards running the Torque Master II gearcase. No more questioning which FS or XS, just go with the Dual PVS Bravo I XS.

  2. From reading this article and what I have read on the net this appears to be an awesome all round prop. I have an 09′ Puma FTD with the 250 Pro XS and 26P Fury. Looking to get a Bravo 1 XS, yet very uncertain of the P. Thinking 27 or 27.5…don’t have the luxury of testing the different pitches on the water. Recommendation? Thanks,

      If your engine rpm at WOT is in the 5700 to 5800 rpm range, consider the 27″ pitch. At 5800 to 5900 rpm; move up to the 27.5″ pitch. When reaching 6000 rpm, move up to the 28″ pitch Bravo I XS.

      Yes, our goal with the entire Bravo I prop lines (FS, OC, XC, XS and Lab) is to be zero balanced.

    I run a 21′-10″ Dual Console Bullet Bass Boat w/300XS 1.62 SM 14″ setback. I’ve been running a 29 Bravo1 XS with extra set of PVS for about 2 yrs. and love it. 89 mph @ 6000 rpm. I was excited about the new 1/2 pitches and decided to buy a 29.5 thinking I could get a little more bow lift and speed. After running it and inspecting it, it doesn’t appear/feel like it has as much cup as my 29 and it’s slipping a lot more 87.7 mph @ 6200 rpm. Same conditions and set-up. I would like your thoughts/recommendations please. Thanks!

    1. John,
      Thanks for checking in with Mercury for a propeller. If you’re looking for top speed consider a 3 blade propeller like the Tempest. If you want to plan in skinny water and you’re looking for long term durability consider the new Bravo I XC. This Bravo offers a tremendous amount of cup along the trailing edge improving planing in skinny water and staying on plan at slower speeds critical for scouting. The 20” pitch offers similar rpm to a 22” standard Bravo I; consider raising the engine (monitor for adequate water pressure)to benefit from the added cup. If you’re seeking good planing with awesome top end speed the Bravo I XS is it. Both Bravo I XC and XS offer adjustable PVS vent holes so you can dial in the hole shot.

    I have A Bass Cat Pantera 3 with a 2015 200 Pro XS on back. I was thinking about trying a 24 Fury, but if I decided to go with the Bravo what pitch would I need. I live in Alabama and summer heat kills holeshot when loaded. How much top end difference would I see as well. Trying to find the best balance.


    1. Jamie,
      If the 24″ Fury is the correct pitch for your desired engine rpm then go with a 26″ pitch Bravo I XS. Depending on the prop you’re currently running (Tempest as an example) move up only 1″ of pitch. In the case of the Fury, move up 2″ in pitch.

    Engine is in the second hole,,25″ transom..
    Spinning a stock Trophy+ 26P to 5600 revs ~ 109 kmh…
    a 27 P Trophy 5300 ~ 111 kmh…
    getting in plane is difficult, cause it looks like trophys have not enough grip…

    Think about buying a Promax or a Bravo I…

      The Bravo I XS in 27″ pitch should offer the best all-around performance – from planing to mid-range cruising – with just a small reduction in top-end speed.

    I have a 2012 Z522 with a Mercury 300XS. I have played with a few props, but always wanting more.

    I had a 25 Fury that had incredable lift. Broke a propshaft doing 75 on KY Lake(home lake) I miss that prop. Tried a couple more 25 Fury and they were horrible.

    Took a 27 tempest that Rich Boger built for my Z 21 and it is pretty good on top end. Light load 75…plenty fast, and great hole shot

    I have the urge for a new Bravo. I bought a used one, but it is a 27. To much wheel?
    5800 rpm is about max and itPorpoises at mid range, but overall I like the 4 blade. Had to run it higher on the Atlas for the hole shot.

    What bravo would you recommend? I may lose a couple of mph, but I don’t have the need for speed anymore…..well, not as much.

      If you’re looking for 150 more rpm, run the 26″ pitch Bravo I XS and buy a new one – it’s well worth the investment.

    I have a Trick 21 feet with a 250 Pro XS II Torque Master gearcase with Mercury Pro max 27 and arrived at 6200 rpm and development 89 MPH. I recommend that prop Bravo 1 XS or Pro max or another prop and pitch 28,29,30.

      The numbers you’ve provided shows the Pro Max is running exceptionally well. When moving up to a 28″ pitch – expect to see your engine speed drop by 150 rpm and your speed increase by 1 – 2 mph.

    2. Miguel what is the hull weight. I have a lanier fast cat hull weight about 1400. This is probably heavy, with a 300xs. 12 inch jack plate
      27 trophy plus . I want to try a pro max, the trophy slips. 1.75 gear ratio 6100 rpm..

    He tried a Bravo 1 28 “pitch and arrived at 6200 rpm and development 88 mph. I was better with the Pro max 27” pitch (6200 rpm and 89 mph), I would try to desrrollar 95 mph or +. Could place a Pro Max 29 Pro finish or finish Lab Pro max 30, you think? . The Bravo OC can walk?

    1. Miguel,
      The Pro Max seems to be the best top speed propeller for your set up. Expect a drop of 300 rpm and speeds in the 90.5 to 91 mph range when running the 29″ pitch Pro Finished model. A Lab Finished 30” pitch Pro Max would enable your engine to turn 6000 to 6100 rpm and, if the boat works well, you should see speeds in the 92 to 94 mph range.

      1. I spoke with you on the phone 2 weeks ago. This hull is as close to a fast cat design as possible. His numbers are high. I hope a pro max will bring these numbers.

    I am considering a new 4-blade prop on a Ranger 620VS with a 250 HP Pro XS Optimax, 6″ Detwiler jack plate, and 15 HP Pro-Kicker. I am currently running a 21″ pitch Tempest. Here are the numbers with the Tempest and a full 46 gallon tank:
    – Fully trimmed down and no jack plate lift ran 40.3 mph at 4800 RPM WOT
    – Trimmed up to 4.0 on the Smartcraft trim gauge and no jack plate lift ran 50.3 mph at 5300 RPM WOT
    – Trimmed up to 4.2 on the Smartcraft trim gauge and setting 9 on jack plate ran 55.0 mph at 5800 RPM WOT
    The Bravo I XS with dual vent holes looks like a great option. What pitch would you suggest going with for such a setup or do you feel a different Bravo I model would be better suited?

      Yes. The Bravo I XS would be the top choice for your 620VS. Typically, you move up one inch of pitch; moving from the 21-inch Tempest Plus to the 22-inch pitch Bravo I XS – achieving the same rpm. I really like the idea of using the jack plate to maximize your performance. The Bravo I XS typically performs better when mounted .5” to .75” above the 3 blade setting.

I have a 2006 stratos 20Ft pro xl with a 06 mercury 225 pro xs I am running a 27 pitch tempest 5500 rpm at 68mph (gps) bad out of the hole I have a hydraulic jackplate 12″ full tank of gas I also tried out the 26″fury hole shot was not so good and top end speed I lost and was running 63 mph (gps) what would you recommend for a prop would it help my holeshot and top end speed. will the 28″ bravo 1xs help?

      Would like to see your engine gain some rpm and with an improved hole shot? Instead of running the 28” pitch – consider the 27” pitch Bravo I XS. Also check your engine height; you may have to move up .5” to .75” to maximize performance for hole shot and top speed.

  14. I have a 2015 nitro zv-18 with a 200 hp optimax.. The boat came with a 18 pitch enertia prop and 10 inch jack plate. I’m running 49 mph @ 5700 rpms wondering what prop would get me a better top end speed? Thanks

    1. Brett,
      Can you provide either the measurement from center of prop shaft to the bottom of the boat or the distance from the bottom of the cavitation plate to the bottom of the boat? The cavitation plate method requires leveling the boat and the engine. Using a small level – hold up to the bottom of the boat (very bottom – not the set back) using the trailer jack to level the boat. Measure the distance from the bottom of the boat to the floor. Place a level on the cavitation plate (the flat area above the propeller) trim the engine until it is level. From the underside of the cavitation plate measure to the floor. Subtract the boat measurement from the cavitation plate measurement to obtain engine height.

    I am currently running a 24 furry of. A ranger Z 119c with a 225 pro xs. Current seeing 71 MPhil at 5680 rim at 60 degree Temps in the mornings. When I add a passenger the Fury drops in speed to about 64 65 and takes a lot longer to get to top end speed. I was told to go to a 25 p bravo I XS. Thoughts? I still have room to bring motor up as well running 3″ under pad.

      The Furys run tall in pitch; a 24” pitch offers similar rpm as a 26” pitch Bravo I XS. The XS is designed to carry loads and allows an increase in engine height; .5” to .75” higher than the 3- blade. I’m leaning toward the 26” pitch.

    I sent info a week or so ago. Have been running an 08 alpha 211 pro xs 250 with a 27p tempest plus. 5600 rpm 70mph summertime and 5700 to 5750 cold weather 71 to 73.
    I purchased a 27p bravo 1 xs. I did not gain any rpm. I did loose 100rpm. The hole shot is still not very good. The top end is the same with great boat lift. I raised and lowered jack plate and seem to run the best where it was set with the tempest.
    I worry about ordering another prop. Will a 26p or 25p be the prop?

  17. Hi Scott, I took the measurements by leveling the boat and got a difference of 2 inches. The cavitation plate is 2 inches higher then the bottom of the boat right now where my jack plate is set.

    1. Brett,
      It’s hard to say because the prop you’re running is working exceptionally well. You’re getting good planing performance, the boat is holding on plane at slower speeds and your top speed isn’t bad either. Stick with what you have. For example, a 19” pitch Enertia could drop the engine rpm by 150 and your speed would increase to 50 but the planing performance may suffer.

  18. Hi Scott, I have an Allison XB-21 BasSport Pro with twin Power Poles and a 36v trolling motor (total of 4 group 27 AGM batteries) and a 250 sport xs (1.75). I am currently running a 30p Bravo 1 (blueprinted) and with 2 people and full fishing load, I have a sluggish hole shot and turn about 5750 rpms at about 80 mph at about 1/2″ below the pad. With just me and a fishing load, I turn about 5950 rpms at about 83 mph.

    I have seen where some guys are getting excellent results in the Allison XB-21 BasSport Pro with Pro Max props and the 300xs running light loaded, but I have been told that with the 250 they become a hole digging prop on takeoff and the hole shot would probably be more disappointing than what I currently have.

    What are your thoughts and recommendations?

      What pitch Pro Max are the guys running with the 300XS? What pitch did they try with the 250 ProXS?

  19. I have a 2014 shoalwater 23 cat raised console. It has the 250 pro xs with the torque master lower unit and a Bravo 1 Comp series 22 pitch prop. Maxed out I ‘m only getting 48-50 mph at 5000-5200 rpm. I’ve been told that the new bravo 1 xc is the way to go what would yall recommend for more top end?

      Glad you heard about the Bravo I XC. It’s becoming one of the most popular props for your application. In fact, we’re having a tough time keeping up with orders. The lowest pitch XC is the 20”. I don’t think you can run any taller pitch because you’re low in rpm to begin with. The XC sports a tremendous amount of cup in the trailing edge offering the opportunity to raise the engine substantially (monitor for good water pressure). The prop stays hooked up – even at slower speeds – when scouting. The top speed should increase but it will depend on how much rpm your engine gains during your engine height test. Seek out an authorized Mercury Dealer to help you with the XC.

    27 Tempest Plus some cup removed, 5800 RPM, 74.2 mph gps. Want to buy a Bravo1 XS. What pitch? thanks

      Typically, a move to the 28-inch pitch Bravo I XS would offer similar rpm to the 27P Tempest Plus. Having cup removed changes the pitch to – let’s say – 26.5-inches. For your Triton, if you use the 27P XS, planing will improve and engine speed at full throttle will increase 50 to 100 rpm. The 28P might be too much pitch – resulting with a slower hole shot.

  21. I need some help with Bravo 1 xs selection. Have a 2002 Viper Conra Coosa 216. With a 26 tempest plus at 3″ below pad 62mph gps, 5750 rpm and 12+ psi water pressure. What would be the best place to start with pitch?

      The 27″ pitch Bravo I XS should offer the same rpm as the 26″ pitch Tempest. Plan on raising the engine .5″ to .75″ when switching from the 3 blade to the 4 blade.

    I have a 2014 Ranger Z521C with a Mercury 250 Pro XS. Currently have a 25 pitch Fury. Should I go up to a 26 or 27 pitch with the Bravo 1 XS or keep the same pitch? Not sure what my maximum RPM is with the Fury.

      I have a couple of things to consider. Usually, the engine can be raised 1/2″ up when compared to using 3-blade. We recently introduced one-half inch pitch Bravo I XS models. I would split the difference and go with the 26.5″ pitch Bravo I XS.

  23. Currently running a 20″ LAZER II on a 2013 Mercury 90 HP 4 stroke. Boat is a 2013 Princecraft 164 Sport. Engine runs 6100- 6250 RPM depending on air temp. Water pressure at WOT 30 PSI. Speed on GPS is 42- 43 MPH. No jack plate but engine is raised to maximum height. Prop slip 15%. ( All testing done with full fuel tank,bow mount and all fishing gear) Looking for maximum speed. I understand that by today’s standards a 90 is a small motor. I just want her to be all she can be without hurting it. Suggestions?

    1. Jerry,
      Thanks for asking. Ideally, we’d like to see the engine operate in the recommended range of 5000 to 6000 rpm. I’m curious why the engine isn’t hitting the rev-limiter at 6250 rpm. You may want to check you tachometer. Your dealer should be able to validate or check the engine via their tach. If the tach is off perhaps you’ll find your set up is good. If the engine is running that high in rpm then consider a 21″ pitch Laser II. That change will drop the engine speed by 150 rpm – resulting in the same overall speed. You could go up to a 22″ pitch Laser II. This move would drop the engine speed another 150 rpm and your top speed could drop by 1 mph as well.

  24. I have a Blazer 202 with 225 promax. Thinking of getting a bravo xs and not sure what pitch to go with. Currently running tempest plus 26p, 15in setback, 1.75 below pad, 6200 rpm full load (gas, partner, fishing junk) running 71.8. Needing more lift and wanting more top end speed loaded. Hauls the mail empty but want more loaded. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

      The 27″ pitch Bravo I XS should give you the same rpm as the 26″ pitch Tempest. The Bravo I XS, with the additional blade compared to the 3-blade Tempest, enables you to run the engine .5″ to .75″ (some cases 1″) higher to maximize performance.

  25. Thinking of getting a Bravo 1 XS and not sure on pitch. 01 Blazer 202 DC 225 Promax, 15in jackplate, 1.75 below pad, 26p tempest plus, 6200-6300 RPM, 72.8 loaded with partner. Not getting enough bow lift. Runs good light. Would like more lift and top speed loaded. Any recommendations?

  26. I’m running a 2104 Frontier Bay boat with a 200 SHO. Runs 58-60mph at 6000rpms loaded with a 21″ Yamaha Saltwater Series 2. Which Bravo would you recommend?


    1. Sid,
      To achieve the same rpm – move up 1” of pitch to the 22” Bravo I FS. Since the engine is at the top of the rpm range, you might consider the 23″ pitch. This would reduce 150 rpm.

    I have a 2007 Triton 215X with a 250HP Pro XS. I have tried numerous props. A 25p Mercury Hi Five (5,850 rpms) and a vented 22p Bravo 1 that was extensively reworked and pitched up to 24p (5,850rpms) run best. My biggest problem is porpoising, probably due to a heavy stern (4 big batteries, 9.9 ProKicker, and a 6″ jackplate).

    I’m planning on removing the jackplate to see if it helps to minimize the porpoising by reducing the fulcrum. I’m also considering a new Bravo XS.

    While I think the Bravo XS would work great, I’m a bit concerned about the shortened barrel that might affect stern lift.

    What are your thoughts in light of the porpoising issue, which is common with this boat?

    I was only able to to get 5,600 rpms out of a vented 24p Bravo I (otherwise stock, no blade work), so I’m thinking a 23p or 23.5p Bravo XS would be about right. This motor seems to like the higher rpms.

      Appreciate the background information and your dilemma. I’m not sure if removing the jack plate is going to change the fulcrum. It may help or make it worse. The short barrel of the Bravo I XS will settle the stern compared to the stock Bravo I. So, before you remove the jack plate – consider running the Bravo I XS. The 24” pitch XS should offer an additional 200 rpm over the stock Bravo I.

  28. Hey Scott-
    I wanted to check your opinion on the right prop for my boat. I am running a 2004 Gambler 2100 with a 2014 Merc 250 ProXS hanging off a 10″ Bob’s Machine jackplate. As you probably know, the Gambler is a heavy bass boat, and is very stern-heavy at rest/idle. I currently have a Powertech 26-P on it now, and it just won’t get out of the hole without seeming to slip badly…….but when I am finally up on plane, it runs super strong and fast and is very responsive. I spoke to Mark Croxton at Mark’s HP Propellors (who seems to be a highly trusted resource in props on all the blogs/boards), and he recommended this Merc Bravo I XS in a 28-P to push my heavy boat with 2 big fisherman and full bass gear. Are you in agreement with this, or would you suggest something different?

    1. Jeff,
      The 28P Bravo I XS might be it. It depends on the amount of rpm you’re getting at WOT with the 26P. Where he gets to see and work with all manufactures’ props, he may know the rpm characteristics from one prop to the other. My focus is on Mercury propellers. Considering the load you’re carrying, you might benefit going down to the 27P. The 27P would offer quicker planing and 150 rpm increase over the 28P. However, it will probably be 1.5 mph slower.     I have a 2016 Shoalwater 20 ft cat with a 150 pro xs slinging the standard rev4 (15 pitch). I have a bobs jack plate and the rev4 blows out when jacked up running skinny. Holeshot coming out of the flats is hard I can’t jack the engine up any or won’t plane out. WOT is 6,000-6,050 at 40-41 mph. I was thinking of a 17 pitch rev4 but very happy to see the new rev4 xc that just came out I think that’s exactly what I need with the cup. My question is 15 or 17 and what would you recommend?

    1. Brett,
      The 15″ Rev 4 XC should be perfect for your needs. You’re set up is exactly why we developed them. Basically, the Rev 4 XC is an extension of the Bravo I XC prop line that we introduced last year. These props are geared toward running skinny water. The added blade cup will lower the engine speed by 250 to 300 rpm compared to the standard prop of the same pitch. However, with these props, you can take advantage of the jack plate. As you test engine heights (make sure you have good water pressure) you’ll find your rpm will increase – getting you back toward the top of the engine operating range. You’re going to have fun with this prop.

          Top speed will depend on how high the engine can run with the prop staying hooked up. I’m thinking the speed would increase a couple mph.

    I have some questions about the Bravo 1 XS. First off I have a 94′ BassCat Eyra. This boat is nose high out of the hole, it has been a challenge to find an all around prop for my application. BassCat later offered a version 2 of this boat that planned easier. Once on plane it runs well. I have a 24 Fury that runs ok in cooler temps with acceptable holeshot 65MPH@5500 RPM I’ve run a 24 Tempest holeshot struggled but top end was great 68 MPH@5800 RPM. I also have a 21 HIGH FIVE as expected a rocket out of the hole but can’t run it on the top. I bought that prop for pulling a tube. I sold the Tempest because I couldn’t get on plane with a load and co-angler but loved it on the top end. I had my fury worked for better holeshot in the summer I think they just knocked some pitch out of it. Holeshot is acceptable in summer now but the prop isn’t the same. I lost lift and speed gained some RPM but it’s lackluster now. I’m really wanting a prop that will perform for my boats unique characteristics, which is what sparked my interest in the Bravo.

    I had a Merc 175 EFI that I blew the powerhead this fall. I just purchased a new 2016 175 PRO XS to re-power. I have a Detwiler 8″ setback manual JP. I haven’t been able to run the new engine yet I won’t until March. The PRO XS is heavier then my old EFI not a lot but my finicky boat 40 more pounds hanging off the back will likely be noticeable particularly coming out of the hole. Here’s what I’m hoping for, a prop that planes like my 21 HIGH FIVE but performs mid and top end like the 24 TEMPEST did. I’m probably one of those unrealistic customers but I’m crossing my fingers. What is your recommendation particularly on pitch? I was thinking maybe 24.5P Or 25P? I’ve read that the BRAVO should go up two sizes to not over rev but I’m worried my holeshot will struggle.. I really don’t want to lug my brand new engine.

      You’re on the right track. The Bravo I XS should give you close to what you’re looking for. The top end should be higher than your reworked Fury but not sure you can make it to the Tempest numbers. I like your idea regarding running either the 24.5” or 25” pitch. The 24.5” pitch will spool up quicker and offer an additional 75 rpm over the 25” pitch. Hard to make the call on pitch; but I’m leaning toward the 25” pitch to keep the engine within the recommended rpm range at WOT.

      Expect the Bravo XC 20” pitch to offer similar engine rpm as a 23” pitch Bravo I FS. There’s 2X the mount of cup compared to the Bravo I FS. So yes, it should hook up much better (reducing slip) than any prop out there.

    I am attempting to gain more speed out of my stock 225 optimax. The boat is a Triton TR-20 X with a 6″ setback manual jackplate. The Prop is a 25 Tempest Plus. WOT is 5800 rpm’s and can’t EVER get it over 65 mph on GPS with 2 people and a full tournament load. Wondering what I can do to make it faster (if anything). I have tried moving the jack plate UP but that just makes the boat chine walk at full trim. The hole shot is good, just want to get more speed, is there a Bravo prop that will work for this or is a 27 pitch Fury the way to go?

    1. Steve,
      It seems like there’s a fair amount of slip; meaning the prop isn’t hooking up the greatest. To achieve similar rpm you would have to step down to the 24” pitch Fury or the 26” pitch Bravo I XS. I’m not sure why the Tempest isn’t hooking up that great. If the Fury hooks up better, you could see a 1.5 to 2 mph increase. I’m thinking the Bravo I XS would reduce slip more than the 3 blade, resulting with a 2 mph speed increase. It’s a tough call. If you have a chance – try one out.

        Thanks for the reply. I really appreciate it… I was thinking the same thing about the prop slip. I am sure it’s because I had the prop “worked” at a local prop repair shop after striking something in the water. I think, based on your opinion, I am going after a new prop and see if that improves the performance. I never could get it out of the hole at first…it just over revved and felt like it didn’t bite at all… I had to install a hydrofoil stabilizer just to get it to plane. I am thinking a bravo 1 xs or 27 fury and remove the hydrofoil.

    I’m running a 2015 Xpress H22Bay with a Yamaha F150. It has a 6″ manual Jackplate with the propshaft set 5 1/2″ below the pad. I’m turning a Power Tech OFX3 21″ pitch 6000 rpm’s @ 53 mph (GPS).
    I’ve been thinking about trying either a Tempest Plus or Trophy Plus, which one would you suggest me trying and what pitch?


    1. Barry,
      To get an idea of the style of prop to go with let’s first look at how well the 3 blade is hooking up. Using 2.15:1 for your gear ratio – the slip comes in at 4.5%. That result leads me to believe the prop is greater than 21” pitch – more like a 22” pitch. The Tempest 23” pitch is probably the best rpm match because your 3 blade diameter measures 15.25” and the Tempest is 14.63”. If you could afford to give up 150 rpm off the top – I’m wondering if you could swing the 24″ pitch Tempest. I think peak horsepower is at 5500 rpm. The 4 blade Trophy matches pitch for pitch to the Tempest.

        My gear ratio is 2:1, that puts my slip around 11%…..I think? The max rpm range on my motor is 6000 rpms.

          Using a 2:1 gear ratio – the slip changes to 6.7%. I’m still thinking your prop is a little tall in pitch. I’ll go back to my previous comments about a 23” and possible the 24” Tempest.

  34. I have a 22 ft Gambler with a Mercury 225 pro xs, with a 23 pitch 4 blade prop that will run 75 at 5800 rpm. I was thinking of trying a 3 blade 25 pitch. Would that be a good switch or should I try a higher pitch on a 3 blade.

      Gambler boats often run best with 4 blade propellers. The 3-blade may not handle as well at WOT. If you’re running a 23″ Trophy, the 25″ Tempest should drop your engine speed by 300 rpm which would be too low.

  35. Scott , I have a 2008 21×2 Triton Bass Boat with a Mercury 250hp Opti Max Pro XS that has a 25P Tempest with a 10″ jack plate. I bent up my prop and debating whether to have it reworked or to buy a new prop. The existing prop gets out of the hole very good and runs approx 70 mph with a lot of chine walking could you help with recommendation. More speed with less shake

      The 25P Tempest. You can also try the 24” pitch Fury which are typically the fastest props out there on your Triton. Sorry no cure for the chine walking.

    I have a 2005 Ranger z21 250 Pro XS. We run a 24p Tempest Plus and at 5900 rpm we hit 67 mph. Would the ProMax be a better prop for top end? We are at 3000 ft altitude. 10 inch jack plate.

      Looking at your numbers at your elevation the Tempest is working well for you. I’d stay with it.

I have a 2009 triton 21×3 pro (big girl) has standard 225 optimax w 25 tempest and new 10″hydraulic jackplate 4 batteries 36v trolley and 2 power poles medium load does 68 and decent hole shot mid range is a little sluggish. It’s hitting Rev limiter at 5800 and beeping looking for a little extra speed and decent hole shot seen new 4 blade fury coming out what prop would you recommend I try to run boat fairly light w tackle and 40 gallons of fuel or less just a big boat.thank you in advance

      In a light load, the Fury 3-blade is typically the fastest prop. If you get a chance, run the 25″ Fury 3-blade which should lower your engine speed by 150 rpm compared to what you are turning with the 25″ pitch Tempest. The 4-blade props are workhorses when it comes to heavy loads.

  39. Scott, I recently purchased a Lake & Bay 21 Boca Grand. Currently I’m running a 27″ Fury @ 5900 and 74 mph on a Mercury 300XS. The boat has an Atlas jack plate, but I’ve found that the Fury likes to run lower in the water. What would you recommend if I decided to run the Bravo XS? The owner of Lake & Bay told me to run the Bravo XS, he said other L & B owners running the Bravo were getting into the 80 mph range. Please give me your feed back and recommendations, I am trying to pick up more top end speed. Thanks, David

      The Bravo I XS works well because the 4 blades allow for increased jack plate heights. Plan on the 29” pitch to hit good rpm. Have fun.

    i have recently tested bravo 20 XC compared to 20 FS the same day (same weights, same transom height) and i saw 450rpm less in wot. Since i can swing bravo 20FS up to 6300 in a verado 6cyl i am wondering if you have any plans on making bravo 18 XC which could swing same as bravo 20 fs (approximately). Are there any plans for XC 18?

      We recently added a 19″ pitch Bravo I XC. Unfortunately we are not able to make it in 18″ pitch. The lower pitch range is covered by the Revolution 4 XC in 15″ and 17″ pitch.

  41. Running a 200 HPDI 3.3l on a Ranger Cayman 191 flats boat. Currently run a rev4 21 with cup added or 23p stock around 60mph how would the Bravo XS compare to the REV4’s? Also have tried 23 &25 tempest plus on this rig but the rev4’s out perform them in all ranges. The rev4’s are great hole shot and mid range just looking for more top end.

      The added cup usually increases the pitch one inch. When comparing with the Bravo I XS – you would move up to a 26″ pitch. For top speed – it’s hard to compete running the same rpm and 2″ of pitch more.

    I have a 2004 Stratos 201pro xl with a 250 efi turning a 27 tempest plus at 5450rpms in the heat at 69mph loaded. Cold weather I’m at 5550 rpms at 72mph loaded. Which bravo xs pitch would you recommend?

      If you want the speed – move up to the 28″ pitch. Be sure to check engine height. You will probably end up .75″ higher than a 3-blade set up. If you were looking for greater bottom end performance, then go with the 27″ pitch. Just know that you will give up some speed.

    I have a 2008 Ranger 620VS in high elevation, (3600ft), with a 250hp Pro XS Torquemaster Gen I and a 9.9 Kicker no jackplate. I am looking for a prop with better hole shot and top speed. I am currently running a stock 19P Rev 4 with all PVS plugs removed (prop doesn’t blow out with the PVS completely out). Full of fuel and 2 people I am getting an average of 50mph @ 5800Rpm in a 6000ft Dynamic Altitude.

    I can still move the motor up another 0.75″.

    Would moving the motor to the top hole and going to a 21 Bravo FS with the PVS plugs out be the correct step for my application?

      You’re spot on with the 21” pitch Bravo I FS (with all holes open), given you have the ability to raise the engine .5” to .75”. If you don’t have the ability to adjust the engine height – I would lean toward the 20.5” pitch FS. If all goes you well, you should see a 2 mph increase.

    I have a 97 Astro with merc 150 Efi, im Turning a tempest 23 to 5400rpm and 54 mph and its really really slow out of the hole, I tried a 23p high 5 and it turned 6000rpm at 52mph, im looking for a good 4 blade prop for better hole shot and handling. The boat is very stern heavy with 2 talons. What prop would you recommend.

    I had a 2014 Triton TRX21, hyd plate, 25 Fury running 74-75 completely loaded in the summer. GPS’d 79.1 in the winter

    Triton replaced my hull under warranty with a ’17 TRX21, equipment moved to new boat (same engine). Tested and boat struggles to push past 71 at 5800-5900 rpm and has no bow lift at all

    Thoughts, I’ve heard someone has the same boat and is running a 27 xs and getting over 75 mph

      The Bravo I XS lifts the entire boat (bow as well as a bit in the stern) resulting with the performance numbers these guys are seeing. The 27” is the right pitch to maximize your performance.

  46. Scott, l have a 2012 ranger 521z with a 250 pro xs and gen 1 torque master lower unit. I run a 25p tempest plus at about 5750 rpm’s in Arkansas summer heat and maybe around 5850 when cooler drier times get here. Top end is about 66-67 with heavy tourney load, 550lbs of people, power poles, ext. Whole shot is bad. Will I do better than this by going with a 25p bravo1xs or should I go higher pitch? Thanks

      Typically, you would want to run the higher 26” pitch and first test at your current engine height. You would then raise the engine at least .75” higher than where you run the 3-blade set up (looking for hole shot and WOT improvement). Have all the vent holes open in the front and install (2) large hole fittings opposite to each other in the rear (venting starting point).

    I recently ordered a 2017 Ranger Z521C Dual Console with a Mercury 250 Pro XS Torque Master. I’ll be running an 10″ Atlas Hydro Jack Plate. I don’t plan on having poles on this boat, but it will be loaded with gas, gear, and always two anglers @ 200lbs each. You could say medium to heavy load. I heard the new Ranger C boats are harder to lift and was considering ordering the new Fury 4 prop. There isn’t much data or info yet available on the Fury 4, so I hope you might be able to provide some insight on what pitch and or prop you would recommend, based on my expected load for the setup I ordered.

    a few questions please sir…right now running a 27 fury on 2015 phoenix 721 with 12 plate and 2015 300xs with gen II lower…..not really happy with 27 fury… so I bought a 28.5 bravo xs diam is 15.25 I think…..very good prop just looking for more….I am thinking about buying a bravo oc lab what pitch? also what will the smaller diam do 14.75 on the oc bravo I think compared to 15.25 on the xs…. turning the 27 fury to 6100 rpm and turning the 28.5 xs to 6100….what are your thoughts please……

      Good question on the Bravo I OC. I don’t know of any Bass boaters running the OC but I do know of some go fast flats boats running them. I like the idea of the smaller diameter with the added tip cup, I question the short barrel planing in a single engine application. We could do a custom OC with the barrel length of a FS to support planing. If you’re interested have your Mercury dealer contact me.

    more info left out some things…top gps speed with fury 27 is 82.8 and 6100 rpm… gps speed with bravo xs 28.5 is 81.4 and 6100 rpm…the bravo is out of the world hole shot and mid range and handling….I am looking for ultimate top speed…..Bravo OC lab what pitch and what will smaller diam of 14.75 do? or should I go with lighting ET what pitch? thanks so much and sorry for two post….

      Thanks for the added information. The Lightning E.T. is a great prop for the light weight, go fast boats. I ouldn’t recommend it for your Phoenix.

  50. Thinking of trying a bravo xs wondering what pitch? I am running a 200 pro xs on a 819 phoenix. With a 24p fury I am on the limiter at 70.5mph. I tried a 26p fury turns it almost 5600 at 73mph but the hole shot is sluggish. This is solo but tournament loaded 30 gallons of fuel heavy tackle 4 batteries. These are 90 plus degree day numbers and high humidity. Both props loose about 2-3 mph when adding a person creating more prop slip.Running 3 1/8-3 1/4 below the pad.

      Thanks for asking. The Fury runs tall in pitch so to achieve similar rpm, a move up of 2” in pitch is recommended. In your case, to get off the rev-limiter – I would look at the 27” Bravo I XS. Yoou should consider having the four front PVS holes open – along with two in the rear (solid and large PVS fittings are included to support dialing the prop in for the best hole shot).

  51. I have a 2010 STV Euro with a 225 Sport XS. The motor has a Sportmaster lower unit at 1.62 ratio and 5.5″ of setback. Currently I am seeing 96 on GPS at 6k – 6.1k RPMS. The prop I am using is a stock Mercury 32×14.5 lightning ET. Any thoughts on what I would see with a ProMax prop. I was thinking about a Pro ET but I heard you stopped production.

      The Lightning E.T. is working exceptionally given the low slip numbers. The 4 blade can offer more stability for some boats. However, with an STV – I think you’re best running will be with the E.T.

      The Technicians spend a great deal of time with the Lab Finished propellers to maximize performance. The thinner blades allow for faster planing – usually by a second. Top speeds are typically 1.5 mph faster. Pro Finished props are more durable for all-around usage.

  52. Scott, I have a 20 foot 2000XLV Norris craft with 2012 250 xs 26 trophy 10″ jack plate. Currently at 5900 rpm 79 rpm. Thinking about Bravo 1 xs 8 hole 27.5. What would I expect to gain or Lose? Thanks , Bill

      The Trophy is hitting a great top-end number for you. The prop is rated to 225 HP, so monitor the blades. The Bravo I XS is built to withstand the demands of the higher horsepower motors. The 15.25” diameter XS should allow for running the engine higher than the 13.75″ diameter Trophy. Typically, a 1″ move up in pitch will offer similar rpm to the Trophy. Expect to see a 75 rpm drop with the 27.5” pitch XS. Top speed might drop 1 to 2 mph but if you carry any kind of load you’ll really enjoy the XS.

    I am currently running a V BOTTOM single outboard on a light 21ft boat with a 300xs 1.62 gears sportsmaster with a 25 Tempest Plus at 6380 rpm doing 85mph.
    The holeshot is not very good.
    I am after top end speed and better holeshot.
    Which propeller would you recommend?

      It’s going to be tough to beat the top speed of the Tempest. For a better hole shot – You may have to trade off top speed. But if you want to try some props, the Fury 3 blade 24” pitch will offer similar rpm to the Tempest. However, it may also offer better hole shot and a 1 mph gain at the top. Try the Bravo I XS 26 pitch. This too will achieve similar rpm as the Tempest 25” pitch. The 4 blade will allow the engine to be raised by .75”. Hole shot performance should be better than the Tempest. It’s hard to say regarding top speed. It may be equal to or 1.5 mph slower. The last prop would be the 25” pitch Pro Max. Hole shot will be a tad better than the Tempest. With the engine raised, you could see a 1 mph speed advantage. The Tempest is very good, if only the hole shot was better.

    I am A swedish boatbuilder and we have just launched a Rupert 26 ft displacement about 3400 pounds RIB with a mercury 400 R with Hydraluic jackplate and gear ratio 1:75.
    We have so far tested these 2 alternatives:
    Enertia 22″ 7000 rpm 58 knots average up/down wind
    Revolution 4 23″ 6400 rpm 59 knots average.

    The revolution feels better in handling and grip but we are looking for a bit more speed and Bow lift which is tricky on a RIB. Experience in Sweden is limited and i would very much appreciate your inputs ! We have 3 more of this setup in build and would really like to find the right Propp. We are not afraid of spending money on the correct prop!

      The specs from the 22” Enertia 3 blade show the prop is slipping more than the 4 blade, consider trying the 22” pitch Bravo I FS and the shorter barrel will give more now lift than the Rev 4.

    Good evening, I am in need of your knowledge. I just purchased a very lightly used 2010 Triton Tr20x hp with Mercury 250 Opti pro xs with 26p fury and 10″ hydro jack plate. I’ve owned Tritons in the past , love this boat but it’s a handful. Seat time will help me tone her down. It just seems the prop is wrong. It’s out the hole slow but with massive top end. 82-83mph at 5900. I don’t care too much about top end. I’m looking for a good all round prop that will fit this rig. Bravo 1 FS ? 27p ? Your assistance is greatly appreciated


    1. Butch.
      You’ve got the right idea regarding switching to the 4-blade Bravo I. I suggest you go with the Bravo I XS with (8) PVS vent holes. The Bravo I FS has only (4) vent holes. That may not be enough venting for a good hole shot. The 27” pitch should work. The Fury’s run 1.5 – 2” taller than the Bravo I XS, meaning you’ll pick up 200 rpm. Remember to raise the engine 1” for starters over the 3-blade height. Fury’s need to run deeper in the water and the 4-blade runs much better raised (not with trim but engine height). The XS comes with all the holes open, consider plugging (2) rear to get you started. Enjoy it.

    I have a 2010 lund Pro V with 300 verado and a 1.75 gearcase. Currently running a 21 tempest with a top end speed of 58 mph. RPM is 6050 with 2 adults, load and 3/4 tank of fuel. Cavitation plate is 1.5″ up from bottom of transom, will adjust it up one hole with this new prop.
    I am considering going to a Bravo 1 series of prop. Do you have a recommendation of which one XS, FS, LT and the pitch?


    1. Bob.
      Ideally, I’d like to know where the engine is mounted because I think you can raise it. Lund sets them low for running 3-blade props. A good height with the 4-blade Bravo I LT is the middle hole. I’d also like to know what the engine rpm is at WOT; along with speed. Not knowing this information, consider the Bravo I LT in 19” pitch. At the current height, expect the engine speed to drop by 150 rpm. By raising the engine one hole, we typically gain that rpm back. The long tube (exhaust barrel) will help get the boat on plane and maintain it at slower speeds. This is ideal for water sports like for wake boarding. The LT also will help lift the stern; complementing the weight of the Verado. Mercury makes a 4-blade – 15” pitch Rev 4 that would offer the same rpm as the 17” Tempest but the mid-range fuel economy would go down as well as top speed; by as much as 3 mph.

      You have your rig dialed in, not sure I would change a thing. The main props used today are the Bravo I XS or Pro Max depending on the load.

    just purchased a Z521C with 250 Pro XS, 24p Fury, 12″ Atlas Hydraulic jack plate. tried different heights on plate and can see no difference in hole shot. Very sluggish 6 to 8 seconds, can you recommend a prop for this?
    Conditions; tournament loaded with me and 3/4 tank of gas. ambient temp 62 degrees. slight chop, wind NNE at 5 to 10 mph.

      If you are running the legacy two stroke 250 Pro XS, consider the Bravo XS. For your hull, the Fury is typically the best for top end, but for planing and rough water handling, it’s hard to beat the Bravo. What are you currently seeing for RPM on top end? Because the Bravo family runs light in pitch and Fury runs tall in pitch, you will most likely end up around a 26.5 pitch for a Bravo.
