Rebirth of an American Icon

The Mercury Racing SB4 7.0 looks like it belongs in this Iconic American muscle car.

We are very excited to reveal Roadster Shop’s gorgeous ’66 Chevelle muscle car featuring our SB4 7.0 automotive crate engine.

Mercury Racing’s advanced four-valve cylinder head combustion system and dual overhead camshaft valve train provide significantly improved performance and durability compared to a standard two-valve design.

Designed, developed and manufactured in-house, the 32-Valve DOHC SB4 7.0 engine adapts our proven high-performance valve train to a customized LS-based cylinder block that produces a staggering 750 naturally aspirated horsepower. William wanted to build a muscle car, something to compete with any late model European sports car.

Roadster Shop is the exclusive SB4 distributor. The Mundelein, Illinois based company has been an automotive aftermarket industry mainstay in performance chassis fabrication and custom car building for over 30 years.

The project started with a call from Roadster Shop customer William Fox. William  wanted to build a muscle car, something to compete with any late model European sports car. While reviewing available engine/power options William was intrigued by the new SB4 for its high rpm operating band and naturally aspirated, 750 horsepower.

Survivor Series

The paint, which ironically is very close to our Mercury Racing Blue, is original as are the chrome bumpers.

The SB4 Chevelle qualified as a Roadster Shop “Survivor Series” build; a car that arrives clean in its original condition. The body is stock with the exception of some minor work  to the transmission tunnel, and firewall. The paint, which ironically is very close to our Mercury Racing Blue, is original as are the chrome bumpers.

Badge of honor.

This iconic American muscle car has all the conveniences of a modern automobile.  Roadster Shop re-engineered and rebuilt the complete vehicle. All new wiring and plumbing was installed. It features a custom Roadster Shop Fast Track chassis and high performance suspension. The SB4 is coupled to a  Tremec/Bowler T56 6-speed transmission. Roadster Shop even built custom stainless steel headers and a complete exhaust system. Massive 345/40/19 (rear) and 265/40/18 (front) tires are mounted on all-new RS OE-2 wheels. A C& R Racing radiator keeps the SB4 cool as it runs through the gears up to its 8000 rpm rev limit.

The interior is updated with sound deadening material, modern instrumentation, cruise control, sound system and power windows. Recaro Expert seats provide support for the driver and passengers to comfortably experience the SB4’s full capabilities.

Show Stopper

Roadster Shop debuted the SB4 Chevelle at the Goodguys 2018 PPG Nationals,  July 6-8 in Columbus, Ohio.  Roadster Shop personnel and fans alike were blown away with the SB4’s smooth idle and user friendly running qualities.

“This is by far the smoothest, cleanest performing engine we have ever used. It feels like its not even trying to make all of that power, almost effortless. The smoothness is noticeable throughout the entire rpm range, from idle to 8,000 rpm,” said Roadster Shop director of business development Josh Henning.

“This package really does a number on your senses.  It gives you an organic analog connection to the car with a smooth powerband to create a hybrid muscle car/super car experience like we have never felt before.”

We are excited to see what Roadster Shop has planned next for the SB4. You can be assured it will be the baddest build in its class.

Project 1080

A restored 38-foot Cigarette Top Gun featuring Mercury Racing 540 sterndrives will be the official pace boat for the Florida Powerboat Club.

We are anxiously awaiting Florida Powerboat Club’s (FPC) restoration of a year 2000 Cigarette 38 Top Gun into a modern pace boat.

A rendering of the Resto-Mod Cigarette 38 Top Gun. The actual graphics package will include additional Mercury Racing signage on the deck and engine hatch area. The engine compartment will feature mirrors under the hatch to showcase the color matched 540 sterndrives.

Deemed Project 1080, the restoration with fresh Racing propulsion formalizes our long standing marketing partnership with FPC.

The 540 engines will be coupled to Bravo One XR drives with the optional Integrated Transom System.

FPC founder Stu Jones is restoring the classic Cigarette from bow to stern with a refreshed cockpit, cabin, flooring and paint.

“I watch some of the custom car shows and auctions on TV, and the term Resto-Mod really stuck out in my head. I just felt like there would be nothing cooler than a classic, straight-bottom Cigarette, with brand new 2018 state-of-the-art hardware and power from bow to stern. This project is so exciting, I feel like a kid again!,” said Stu.

The Integrated Transom System (ITS) features integrated steering cylinders, eliminating the need to mount external steering to the transom. A built-in seven inch set-back enhances performance on selected applications, including the 38 Top Gun.

The original 540 Bulldog engines are being replaced with our all-new 540 sterndrives featuring digital throttle and shift (DTS). The engines are coupled to Bravo One XR drives with optional Integrated Transom Systems (ITS).  Mercury Racing Bravo I FS propellers will set the pace for all to follow.

The original K-Plane trim tabs are being replaced with all-new tabs with digital trim senders.

Lauderdale, Florida is performing the installation and rigging of the engines, drives and accessories.Mercury Racing digital Zero Effort Controls will offer smooth throttle and shift response to the 540 sterndrives. A Mercury VesselView 502 monitor will provide vital engine and vessel data. the revised helm will be complemented with an array of digital analog gauges as well.

Stu’s Resto-Mod dream is becoming a reality as the first coat of paint is applied. Project 1080 is set to make its public debut at FPC’s Emerald Coast Poker Run event, August 15-19 in Destin/Ft. Walton Beach, Florida.

Prop School – Part 1: Introduction

Working in performance boating is exciting: It’s fast-paced. Propulsion systems and hull designs are in continual evolution. Our customers are generally astute, technically oriented and often quite colorful characters. We’re all performance freaks! We’re all continually learning. That’s what makes my job so much fun!

The fifth edition of the iconic propeller guidebook which was first published in the 1980s.

If you are like me, your first boating experiences were in lower horsepower boats used primarily for family recreation, fishing, skiing, wakeboarding, or general cruising. And like me, your boating experiences and knowledge have evolved over time.

When working with high-end performance boats and experienced customers, one tends to assume people have basic product knowledge. However, a propeller is complicated. Because our backgrounds vary widely, our levels of understanding vary widely, too. So, we’ll revisit the basics and then dive deeper on propeller form, fit and function. Read more
